I remember someone saying a while back that SF packages now have to be signed for when they're delivered. I'm not overly familiar with USPS but does anyone know how you go about getting your package if you're not home when they try to deliver it?

I live alone and my mail usually comes 30-60 minutes after I leave for work so it's pretty unlikely I will be there to sign for it. Not sure how that works. Has anyone else had this problem?

USPS should leave a note on your door that you can either sign and leave for them, and they'll leave the package when they come back, or you can take it to the post office itself and turn it over to get your package.

I was just on the USPS FAQs page but I couldn't make heads or tails of their answers. It's like they were translated from another language by Bing... seriously.

I guess I'll just cross this bridge when I come to it.

What should work for you would be to call the post office. If the mail hasn't gone out yet it should still be there for you to pick up. You should also be able to request that they hold the package for you to pickup.

I'm very friendly with my mailman and he knows I order lightsabers every now and then, one time I was driving into our neighborhood and I knew my lightsaber was going to be delivered that day, and I passed the mailman as he was leaving the neighborhood. I rolled down my window and shouted at him "do you have a package for me today???" And he stopped his postal car and said he already finished delivering all the mail for the day, got out my lightsaber from the back, tore up the little slip he was taking back to the post office along with my package, and gave me my saber there in the middle of the street and told me to rip up the note he had put in my mailbox. It was the best thing ever :D

My experience is the mailman justdrops it on the porch and doesn't ask for a signiture. It makes me worried sometimes someone will just come up and pick it off the front door. But that might be because I live in boston, it feels like mail carriers aren't too worried about that sort of stuff.
