I think a lot of it has to do with the length of the two hilts joined to make the saber. With some of the longer ones, you would probably go for the shorter blades, and vice versa. Good rule of thumb, as I understand it, is to keep the entire thing around 7 feet in total length (give or take a few inches). That seems to be the average where it is not so long that it gets unwieldy, and not so short that it looks like a pike.

That is not to say that nobody can effectively handle one larger than that, just more of an average to work from, depending on your own physical size.

As with all things, your mileage may vary!

On the saberforge website it lists 37" as standard, 32" as staff, and 26" as shoto, most people I think would use the 32" blades on their double bladed sabers.

I've become a fan of the 32" blades for just about... well. everything. I love the weight and balance of them. Perfect for a staff and perfect for solo or dual wield. :) To me, anyway. I think there's a lot of personal preference that goes into it as well.

That's three experts in a row agreeing with me. You don't get much better than that!

Maybe it's just cause I'm short, but I like 32" blades for a normal saber. If I were making a staff, I'd probably shrink them down to a 28"

But that's just me and my 5'9" self. My 37" blade basically sits around my house unused, whereas I use my 32" as a sword and I kinda switch between using a 32" and a 26" in my extended Viper. I don't own any staffs though.
