Out of sheer boredom I decided to see what the most common form is here. Im proficient (after training since I was about 7 soo almost 11 years) in all forms including Jar'kai and double bladed combat, however I have a focus on single blade forms, my best being a Djem So/Juyo hybrid and Makashii. What about you guys? Feel free to go into detail

Since Im relatively new to the saber community, I've only trained in saber combat for about two years. I got Shii-cho down packed. But now I'm dabbling in Makashi and soresu.

Where do you guys learn these? And who defined these styles? How much consensus is there other than jar'kai = dual wielding?

What are my best options in colorado

Hi Major_Tom,

There are a few channels and videos on YouTube where you can learn about the Forms. Possibly the most well known source is that of Terra Prime Light Armory where there are beginners, improvers and advanced level videos of the various forms.
You can find their YouTube Channel by clicking HERE for TPLA
The TPLA system can also be studied via their website where you can enrol as a "Learner in Exile"

There is also a set of six videos from a friend of mine named Master Medwyn who has taken these forms a step further and combined elements of each discipline into a set of new forms based on the "Elements of Earth, Fire, Water, Wind and Spirit".
The Distant Earth Knighthood (DEK) YouTube channel can be found HERE for DEK

Hopefully this info should give you a head start,

Hey Major Tom. Im mostly self taught. It wasnt until I was 16 years old that I learned about the forms. However, If you want, private message me and maybe I can help you out a bit. Realistically, a lot of it comes from dueling with others but Im sure I can get you started with videos or worded tutorials.

So just as an overview for those who aren't familiar
Form I/Shii Cho: Ancient form, uses wide sweeps with the intent of disarming your opponent. Personally reminds me of Japanese Katana style dueling.

Form II/Makashii: Fencing style sword play. Simple footwork and lots of single handed wrist work. Utilizes jabs and small cuts instead of heavy hits and slashes

Form III/ Soresu: Heavy defense that only uses offense when there is an opening.

Form IV/ Ataru: Fast, aggressive fighting style. Relies heavily on speed, catching you opponent off guard and finishing the fight fast. Often used with form III.

Form V/Djem So/Shien: Djem So: Heavy hitting, aggressive form focused on returning blows and domination. Always pressing the attack even when on defense. Shien: Less aggressive than Djem So, with a focus on returning blaster bolts.

Form VI/ Niman: Blend of all forms. Mostly used by those who do not focus on combat.

Form VII/Juyo/Vaapad: Juyo: A very aggressive form related to Ataru, however it is fueled heavily by emotions such as anger.
Vapaad: Offset of Juyo where you use your opponents anger against them by fueling yourself with .

Even if you can't find a dueling partner, you can still work on the basic forms using the instructional videos from TPLA. I've heard you can join their Facebook group and post videos and the masters there will let you know what you're doing wrong and right. I was working on the TPLA videos by myself in 2016, but my work is very physical and I didn't have the energy to continue, so I switched to building sabers. ;)

Whenever I get my saber in I will begin to teach myself Djem So, as this form best suits my Character's heavy reliance on powerful attacks to overwhelm his opponents. I'll probably couple this with Ataru, possibly trying to figure a way to mix the two together it that's possible, to give fast yet powerful fury of attacks.

Hi Shai Kah,

I practise Ataru with Soresu and every now and then I'll pick techniques from other forms to use when I discover situations that require something different. It may not please the purist's but your style is very much like your saber....it belongs to you.

As such I can see you utilising these two attacking forms, especially with that mechanical arm of yours!

Thanks For Tyeth! :) Yeah, especially with the mechanical arm, I imagine his arm can deliver devastatingly powerful blows compared to any normal person, easily overpowering opponents!

Talking about combat forms, I would love to see the "breeze sword" (2:45min) performed with a lightsaber.

I would pay for this :D

To my untrained eye, I can see Soresu in that. That's pretty cool stuff.

Whatever Star Wars style is closest to Philipino Eskrima/Kali. I do incorporate some Fencing, Hubud, HEMA, and Wing Chun here and there but my main proficiency is Esc(k)rima

Just watched a youtube vid about Eskrima. They stand awfully close together and do a lot of work with their free hand..

While it looks impressive, I would consider oppening a shop for robotic hands in that area. :D
