I'm tinkering with a saber for my wife. She has her heart set on a pink LED, and Saberforge has them, however, the soundboard is a bit out of my price range right now, and I really want one I can put soundfonts on for her (Going to try and synth a dragons growl, with a snarl for the movement, maybe a roar for clash sound). I was wondering if anyone knew if a nano biscotti could handle a 12w saberforge LED? and if so, could someone post a beginners guide to wiring the thing? It's just the cheapest soundcard I've found at the moment.

The NBv3 will not handle all the LEDs in the X4 SF sells.

You could however use a TRI-Cree to achieve a pinkish hue. Mixing between the Red and Blue LEDs on the main channel (I'm not sure what the best LED pair and resistances to use would be for Pink though) and a White LED for the FOC.

That being said, the NBV3 is $67 and the Sabercore2.0 boards are $70. So, not a huge price difference there.

If you wanted a soundboard you could apply fonts to that can handle the X4 LED, then a Spark2 would work for $80. You could use the X4 LED from SF basically out of the box.

Spark's the little brother of the SF Hero Board, handles 12W LEDs just fine, and isn't much more than NB:

It also auto-mixes hums, so it's a lot easier to make custom soundfonts for.

I typically don't recommend anything more than a 6W for NB.

OK, darn. Only reason I was hoping the NBV3 was because TCCS offers it plug and play, was hoping to avoid soldering, not good at it. Last board I tried I baked the metal off the connection trying to get the solder to stick

Sorry, can you please explain what do you mean by NBv3 cannot handle the 12W+ SF LED? I have a Blood Orange wired up to a NBv3 and it lights up just as bright as a SaberCore 2.0.

NB has a rated limit of 2.5A on the main channel.

Technically, the SF 12W+ should be pulling 4A+ on a fresh battery.

If NB's working with the LED, there are two options:

1) NB's Main Channel limit is higher than the manual states.
2) The LED isn't actually pulling 4A.

I don't have any 12W+ LEDs on-hand to test, but I've heard murmurs that the stars wind up throttled to around 2A for some reason or other - perhaps thermal issues because of the star design. If so, yeah, they'll work fine on an NB.

I've used plenty of 12W+ LEDs with NBv3 installs. So far, I've had no issues. Though the manual does state 2.5A, testing with a multimeter shows it can indeed push more.

I've got a couple of NBv3 waiting for install. I'll see if I can find a part number for the transistor and get some specs. Might be it's a higher rating than the v2, but the manual wasn't updated.

Me think the spec in the v3 manual may be incorrect/not updated. Unless someone has actually experienced a failed install of NBv3 with SF 12W+ LED, I'm not sure how to interpret the points above. A number of installs I have come across online and my own have no issues.

Any new info regarding this topic? I'm thinking of doing my first custom install, and I was hoping I could use the pre-wired NBv3 from TCSS, and install quick connects so I could use the 12w+ LEDs I already have from Saberforge. Would that even be possible?

The Quick connects from SF are not the same as the JST connectors TCSS sells. You CAN use them, you'll just need to solder the right connectors to the wires depending on which connectors you choose to go with.

Anyone test the X4 star to see what the actual draw is? I've also heard some folks reporting it not pulling the full 4 amps due to heat issues. I went to dust off my old Multimeter and quickly found it's time for a new one...
