I'm considering picking up a "well loved" saber, and while discussing the possibility I found out that it's an older style 6W stunt, with a AAA battery pack instead of a rechargeable battery.

If I go ahead with the deal, one possibility I'm pretty seriously considering is to just send it into the Forge for some refurb and TLC, but since it's out of warranty anyway. the other thing I considered was the possibility of doing my own upgrade work as a project.

Can I just snip the leads going into the current battery pack and wire them up to a 18650 holder like this one? Or would I need to do something a bit more complicated?

I would imagine, to be on the safe side, you'd need to do a full rewire. What you're suggesting may work, but if that's not the way it was originally designed, and a little old, the wires/sodder points may not be strong enough to support to increased power flow. If I was doing it, I would just pull the LED out, and replace the wires and resodder it all, to be safe.

Agreed. Better to do it right from the get go, than worry about something melting later from overload.
Imagine what you will know tomorrow....

Just like Knytiri recommended, tear it all out and do a full rewiring. This way you're sure it'll hold the 12W. :)

Well, my original thought was to leave the existing 6W LED in and just make it compatbile with the rechargeable batteries I already have, but I see where you guys are going.

So if I was going to do this, what parts would I need?

battery holder, LED, wiring, heatshrink? Would I need a (new?) resistor? A new switch?

Why does this suddenly feel like I'm looking at the saber equivalent of a money pit? :)

You can use the same LED, I just meant pull it out to wire it up lol. So you'd just need the battery and battery pack, and wires, of course lol

Well, if it originally uses 3xAAA (4.5V) batteries then it will likely be resistored with that in mind (depends on colour really).

You might find that using an 18650 (3.7V) battery might be marginally dimmer than using the original battery pack. (?)

If you are planning to use the same LED, then you might want the battery holder, some wire and possibly a new resistor (depending on colour .... blue and green XB-D LEDs will be fine without an resisto but red or amber etc will require one).
