I have an UltraSabers saber I purchased a few years ago with an Obsidian 1.0 soundboard. The LED currently in use is a 4 W Seoul Star, 1000 mA at 3.8 V max. I noticed that the voltage requirement for the 12W or 6W SaberForge is the same. I am wondering if I can swap out the old LED with either of these, preferably the 12W. Seeing that either of these would draw more current than my old 4W, I suppose I would need to upgrade the batteries to the higher mAH rated, correct?

Thanks,

Bill

Well, I don't know what the mAh of whatever battery you're using, but yes, SF LEDs are wired parallel so you don't need more than 3.7V. They use 3400mAh 18650s in their sabers.

18650s with 3400mAh aren't very expensive so if you don't already use them it wouldn't hurt to upgrade, even if you don't end up using a SF LED.

After reading many threads on this and other forums, I am not sure I can just slap a SF LED in place of my Seoul in my current US. I would need to know the max current of each LED used in the 6W and in the 12W version. Since I have read that SF LEDs run in parallel at about 4 volts, doing the math I get the following total current required for each device:

Since P=VI, and therefore I = P/V,

For the 12 W, 12/4 = 3 A or 3000 mA. Assuming a parallel arrangement and similar current requirements for all four LEDs, each will get about 750 mA. I don't know if my Obsidian can handle 3 A.

For the 6 W, 6/4 = 1.5 A or 1500 mA. For 2 LEDs, this also works out to 750 mA each. 1500 mA might be possible.

Measuring my Obsidian output voltage, I get over 6 V. This might mean fried LEDs! So if I can find a 1500 mA constant current driver or select the right resistor, this may work. Not so sure about the 12 W LED at this point.

I'll just go ahead and say I don't know anything about Obsidian boards. I don't know what their min/max voltage requirements are like and I still don't know what battery setup you're using. It sounds like your life would be a lot easier if you use less voltage in your setup.

Probably somebody more familiar with US builds can help you more than I can.

No problem; thanks for your input! I probably answered most of my questions myself.

On the off chance that you're looking to swap out the entire electronic set up in your current US hilt instead of just the LED, SF does offer champion level installs on US sabers for $220, installing a 12W LED and either the SaberCore Crimson soundboard or the SaberCore Viridium soundboard. If you're interested you can shoot them an email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to set it all up.

A couple of questions;

1) Does SB make their own sound boards?

2) Can a DYI person buy one?

3) Does the sound board drive the LED for power purposes?

4) What effects can the board handle?

While I can answer All of these, i can do my best.

1. Yes they do! They have two different models if I'm not mistaken; the one in the hero level, and the board in the champion level

2. I believe so, you may need to contact the team and see.

3. I have no idea

4. The hero level board can handle 5 sound fonts and three LEDs, while the champion level can handle 1 sound fond and 1 LED.

If I'mm wrong please correct me

Well, I wouldn't say the Hero does 3 LEDs. It runs 2 LED circuits independently or simultaneously.

I know.. I know... Champion and Hero can both run 4 dice but we're not talking about that.
