Hey all. Pretty new to the game and was thinking about giving my disciple a mirror finish. How difficult would it be to use a dremel to remove the imperfections and give it a chrome look? Has anybody done this successfully? I looked around, but didn't really see anything.

Yeah, I was looking into that, but it won't remove the machined lines from when it was on the lathe. It can make the aluminum itself look really pretty and shiny, but it won't do anything to give it a mirror finish.

The only way to do it without breaking your arms would be to disassemble everything, chuck the individual parts to a lathe, and progressively sand the pieces with finer and finer grit sandpaper. Then you would be able to move onto polishing. If you're doing it while assembled and by hand, it will take a long, long time.
It may not be worth the effort that way.
No matter where you go, there you are.

The polishing compound itself won't remove the lines, no, but that's why you use something else first. Either fine grit sandpaper or steel wool. I used 0 and 0000 steel wool to take most of the lines out of my Consular and then shined it up with Mother's. Very shiny, but not too perfect looking.

I've never used a dremel, but assuming you can get the correct attachments for finishing metal it shouldn't be too hard. Just go finer and finer on your abrasive grit and finish with a cotton/felt pad + polishing compound. Again, idk what attachments they make for dremels so you may be best doing it by hand. My experience is with larger power tools (pipe/tube sander, burnisher, etc).
