Dear community,

I am receiving my first saber soon and as I love the old gladius and I could make an exchange, I accepted that it will come with heavy weathering (and I want standard finish) but the owner told me that I can take it easely away with sanding paper.

But before proceeding I wanted to check more experiences and maybe even if you have pictures to share.

Are there some precautions to take a part of taping the leather?

Will I be able to reach the really shinny original version?

Thank you so much for answering

Hey Micha,

No, the really shiny standard finish will not be achievable by using only sand paper. Even fine grit sandpaper will not make a piece of machined aluminum look as it did when it came off the lathe. Buffing wheel and compound (after sanding) to remove whatever marks were applied during the factory weathering would be the closest thing possible.
I say this only because you used the word "perfect" when you described the quality of finish you require. Sanding will definitely remove the black anodizing, but the saber will appear to have been sanded. It will look seasoned, or used, which is not necessarily a bad thing. But it sounds to me like you need a saber that left SF as a standard finish Gladius.
No matter what happens now, you shouldn't be afraid. Because I know today has been the most perfect day I've ever seen.

Hi Adam,
thank you for your answer.
I used the word perfect to insist that I am looking forward to get to the closest posible to that.
I heared that I can use a aluminium polisher for my drill. Will that not do the job?
Thanks again for your advices.

Yeah, I think you'll be fine. Sorry for taking you so literally haha.

Here's what I'd do: start with like an 800 or so grit sandpaper and go the opposite direction of the weathering finish until all the black is gone. Then use a 1500 grit going the way the weathered finish was originally applied. This should take away any marks from the weathering, and leave you with a surface fine enough for polishing. Chuck whatever wheel you have into your drill, and use whatever compound you may have. I've heard of people using toothpaste if they're desperate. I think you'll get what you're after. Good luck!

Great, thank you for the details,
What do you mean with opposite direction? perpendicular?
I can imagine the weathering has been applied while the hilt was turning no?

Exactly. They weather the sabers on a lathe. It's quick and efficient, but not the most natural looking result. Just my opinion.
Anyway sanding perpendicularly with the 800grit will remove that finish without deepening any grooves left by the factory weathering process.

I got my saber and I am about to get the sanding paper etc from the shop but I just saw the comment someone did on fx-sabers who recommended me to use acetone. Would this be strong enough for what saberforge uses for weathering? This would be probably a simpler solution.
Thanks

Hey Micha,

The key difference is anodization vs. paint. Saberforge anodizes their sabers, but most people (who don't have the equipment to anodize aluminum) will use paint to weather their sabers. I suspect that this is what the FX forum member assumed you were dealing with.

Acetone works great for removing excess paint from a saber leaving behind only as much as the person needs to achieve the desired degree of weathering, but it won't do jack squat against anodization.

Trust me, you need those abrasives I mentioned earlier to remove anodization from aluminum.

This is how the saber looks right now, so you can later comment on the transformation
