I would expect that at some point the entire website will have to go down for an update of this magnitude. They will likely have to load a new version of the site behind the scenes and then in the middle of the night (hopefully) they will take the site down in order to load the updates. Maybe they are trying to get it ready prior to the weekend when most people are available to spend their time on the site.
