I image it would be best to have it be all silver.

I can't speak for SF, but typically when an object is PC'd, it's media blasted. Any finishes or paint are blasted away revealing bare raw material. The only thing I can imagine would impact this would be if it was the battle-damaged weathering.

Someone from SF feel free to correct me. That's how all the parts on the drift car got PC'd ;)

SF uses black anodizing for their dual tone and weathered sabers, which can be stripped using chemicals but won't ever go completely away (it is essentially dying the aluminum). Depending on whether or not the powder coating Burns3558 selects has a translucent finish (like black chrome), this can affect how it turns out.

I only think it would be an option if it wasn't the full $150 extra for the (psuedo?) upgrade. I'd still argue for the NB up to a point, but really, truly I don't think it's worth it.

I'm not really even a fan of paying so much for a champion upgrade. I wish I'd popped for it for my ASP but beyond a first saber it's much more worth it to invest in gaining the skill to install your own sound boards. I understand that each saber includes the installation cost of the boards and such, but when you ( specifically I ) don't need RGBA or FoC, the NB does everything I need including customizable fonts and a really nice 'shimmer' on clash and flicker. Aaaaand it's only $70 for the brand newest of models.

Anyways, this is not what this post was about but I'd be super glad to field any pms or to see a discussion post about this pop up somewhere else.

The main draw of the Naigon soundboards (like the Spark Color 2 SF uses for Hero sabers, which goes for about $116) is that new features can be added via software updates. Their most recent one added delayed ignition for the quillons (side blades) in a cross guard saber. If I ever pick up one of SF's crossguards, I'll put a Naigon Spark 2 (which goes for around $80) in it. And from what I've seen, Naigon boards have a more user friendly interface to change the board settings on a computer, but are a real pain to wire up.

On the flip side, Plector Labs' boards (like the Nano Biscotti and Cystal Focus) are a bit more involved to change settings (basically changing lots of numbers in a text file), they are a lot easier to wire up. I really like how the Crystal Focus has swing sounds that chain together, stab sounds, and "force" sounds (basically additional sounds triggered by pressing an aux button and either swinging, stabbing, or clashing), having 12 or more sound banks, color mixing, multiple on/off sounds depending on how you hold the saber, "Easter egg" sounds that trigger after a set of movements, and a bunch of accent LEDs (which can be set to act in a different parameters) seems like overkill to me.

The Nano Biscotti is nice (I'm putting a NBv3 in my Graflex 2.0), but it would've liked to have some sort of auxiliary sound like a blaster block, and its sound quality isn't as nice as others. Here's a video of Rob "Madcow" Petkau showing off the sound differences between Plector Labs' boards.

As for SF's Sabercore boards, I think they are a great user-friendly middle ground. They can power a quad LED (usually only available on high end boards unless you hack a NB, which I'm not sure how that works now that the v3 has the PEx built in), have an aux sound, and the flicker, volume, and sensitivities can be adjusted in hilt. Other boards have in hilt menus, but can only swap between sounds and colors; everything requires connecting to a computer.

Plus, according to what Phil has said about it, the 3.0 version will allow for swapping soundfonts via micro-usb and what he called "flare on clash", which I'm thinking will be like the NB's shimmer on clash, which I prefer to FoC (though I am wiring my Graflex up for FoC since I'm already using a Tri-Cree).

TL;DR: There are lots of soundboards out there, all with different levels of features and costs.

I ordered the all silver reborn. From looking at reviews and pics of the all silver model it looks as if part of the hilt has a dull finish with a texture?

If part of the hilt has a texture then will it be possible to add a powder coating like a gold or a black chrome that has a smooth finish?

All silver hilts should just be the bare aluminum, and maybe some silver anodizing, which wouldn't have a texture (and even if it did, it wouldn't affect the adhesion of powder coating). My what I meant by saying black anodizing would affect translucent colored powder coating was that you'd be able to see through to the darker spots where the black was/is. Though if you chose a solid color this wouldn't really matter.

Here's a link to some powder coating color examples from The Custom Saber Shop (SF's customs guys should have the same selection if not more).

If you'd like to know more about the process, here's a video of Ken Hampton (of Hampton's Handcrafted Lightsabers) showing how he powder coats his hilts:

My favorite version of the Reborn SF offers is the dual tone finish (as it looks closest to the saber it is based on), but I'd love to see how yours turns out!

Jk thank you for the info.

Im hoping my hilt and some other suff arrive before Sf customs start taking commissions again. Either way this saber will take a few months to complete. Ill post pics when its done. The wait begins.... :silly:
