I'm 5'9" and I utilize 32" and 27" blades depending on the situation. Both are very comfortable to me... 37" are too long for my tastes, but it is all personal preference. I know people who are shorter than me who prefer longer blades.

So I just ordered my dual ASP sabers. I was looking at the hilt length alone and it comes to 16". From what I've read the recommended length for hilts is closer to 12". Has anyone had any experience with a hilt this long and have you encountered any additional difficulty with spinning/dueling? I intend on dual wielding with 32" blades so that's 4ft exactly per Saber. And just under 8ft for my staff.

I find the longer standard blade is mainly for 2hand combat styles. Imagine Not too many 2hand styles due to the lightsaber combat styles but im thinking the custom crossguards may change that.
For 1hand/dual weild, i too would go to a shorter blade mainly for the saber flexibility of doing quick offensive strikes and defensive blocks. I thought blade sizes were optional for the middle and higher tier sabers. I have a standard blade 37 incoming (should be the last time) and my future saber blades will be the shorter 32 blade and two 26 shoto. |

That's what I've been thinking too, shorter blades for faster more precise strikes. I'm just concerned about the hilt length itself as at 16" it's roughly the length of my forearm. |

From my messing around on the online saber builder I think some of the lengths are a bit off for some of the emitters.
From what I can tell, the emitter length given is the overall length of the emitter including claws if applicable, not from the base of the emitter to the point where the blade actually starts. This means that if you have claws protruding alongside the blade, the overall length of your saber design will be the actual length = the length the claws protrude, if that makes sense. For at least one emitter (example is Venom, I think) it looks like if you swap it out for another emitter exactly the same but without claws that would actually lengthen the hilt (example is Viper, I think), then the overall length will give you the actual length of your saber. Not sure if that's applicable to you or not, but I hope its understandable at least.

While my experience is limited to my only saber, this is what I've found out for myself. Please note I am 6'3"
37" is indeed ideal for those that want movie accurate presentation. Lightsaber blades tended to be 1 meter long(old canon), so 37" is the closest. It does add a bit of weight to the overall piece because of the longer length, which makes it a bit unbalanced for single handed use as the balance point tends to be about 3"- 4" past the end of the emitter. This will make it a bit top heavy in comparison to shorter blades. I find this to be on par with your average katana/ moderate sized two handed swords so this is right up my alley given some of the training I've taken. This does not mean it cannot be used one handed, I can do so with few issues but again I'm a bit more practiced at this blade length. The length will probably be more problematic for those of shorter stature. If I was going to go for specific one handed/dual wielding use, or going to take up the flashy end of spinning I would end up going with 32" blades as the balance would be back that couple of inches and make it easier to handle. Probably replace the pommel with something a bit heavier to counterbalance too if I really got into spinning. |

Get the length that most closely simulates the size of the weapon that you have the most experience in/ are training with. I.E. if you are a Rapierist, take the length of your arm, from armpit to wrist, and double it. that is what the masters of that age suggest. for a more longsword like saber, a blade of 36-42" (max) and a hilt of 8-11" would be about right. whatever you do, it should not end up being too much larger than reaching your armpit from the ground, as this was the max size for "war swords"
