Thanks Kouri for the information! I would be looking for the best green LED possible. I would probably pick the SF 12W+ green if I just wanted flicker on clash but if I wanted FoC, could I get a custom GGGW LED? I haven't looked into this so forgive me if this is a silly question, but is there an LED with 4 cree and 1 white?

I've got confirmation that you can order custom Hero LEDs from Saber Forge, so a GGWW with individual negative leads is definitely possible. Not sure if they'd assemble a GGGW though. Maybe if you ask nicely?

I know LuxeonStar offers quad Rebels with a custom optic that will fit into a 1" heatsink, but when they were tested, they weren't much brighter than a similar Tri-Rebel setup, so the advantage is arguable.

Would it be possible to use the separate Power Extender to drive the main 12w+ LED at full power? Is that a third option?

It's never really been about the Power Extender.

The reason 12W+ LEDs don't work on Nano Biscotte is the transistor on the Main LED channel - the transistor is only rated at 2-2.5A, and a 12W+ runs at 4A. When I say a 12W+ needs to be run at half power, I really mean that each LED needs to be driven at 500mA, resulting in a 2A unit that consumes about 6W (but is still a bit brighter than a typical 6W+).

What folks did (and probably can still do) is solder on a second transistor alongside the existing to bump that current limit up to 4-5A, allowing use of a 12W+ LED. The *only* reason it's called the Power Extender Hack is because the Power Extender boards happened to have the required transistor on board, and were an easy source for folks that didn't want to hunt the part down on Mouser or DigiKey.

By the way, the part on NBv2/PoweExtender is a SI2302 transistor. It looks to be the same on an NBv3, but I've not seen anyone attempt it - and it's not something I have any interest in doing.

So for emphasis - no one was using a PEX to run a 12W+ LED. There's no way to use a PEX as-designed to enable a 12W LED, and this is why integrated-PEX-on-NBv3 doesn't allow 12W LEDs. Folks were just harvesting parts from it to bump up the NB's ability (either by literally removing the transistor from the PEX board and soldering it to the NB board, or by wiring the Transistor via unorthodox wiring to the NB while it was still on the PEX board).

Thanks for the info. I guess I could always replace the LED with a Tri-Cree. That'll work, right? And then I can have FoC, so there's a plus.

You could, but if you haven't already bought the Nano Biscotte, the Spark 2 is only $13 more, which is less than the cost of a new LED.

I may just install the Spark 2 on my current saber. But I'll do it later. Right now (read: next, probably this year) I was thinking about doing a full electronics install on another hilt, so I could use a Tri-Cree and NB there. Again, thanks for the information, and keep that soundboard breakdown going! It'll be one of the greatest resources we'll have on this forum if you complete it.

Huh. I learned things today!

So why are there reviews and videos out there showing people wiring up 12W+ / 12W LEDs to the NBV3 and claiming it's better for them now? Is it just that lack of having to hack around, even if it's running the "wrong" amperage?

I've only personally seen Shameem hook a 12W to an NBv3. A member here asked about hooking a 12W+ blue to the NBv3, and the response was to use a resistor of a certain size. I crunched the numbers and saw that the 12W+ was being limited to about 2A.

So yeah, right now, my best guess is that folks are running their 12W+ at half power and just assuming that's how they're supposed to look.

Jordan Moll's done some NBV3/12W+ builds too, on his youtube, and I'm pretty sure I've seen a couple others out there.

That's interesting, though. I was actually seriously thinking about doing my first build soon. Sounds like I should consider a Spark 2 over an NBV3 if I want to get the best results with a 12W+.

For anyone subscribed to this thread, I started up on the sound board descriptions over at the Saber Electronics DIY section:

I hope the the sabercore 3.0 will let you add your own sound fonts. If not then I'll have to figure out what sound board to use for my ASP saber with a SF LED. I want the PITCH BLACK sound font. OR just get another LED.

Here is what my saber will look like:
