I just saw this render on the Facebook group. Phil had asked Thomas Snyder to do a quick render of the upcoming Tanto Shoto versions of existing hilts. There are some details that might change, but it sounded like this is a glimpse of what is to come.

Take a look!

EDIT: You might have noticed the name change on this new series. Phil decided that Shoto was a more fitting moniker...and so it became!
Imagine what you will know tomorrow....

Hmm, Interesting.

Makes it difficult for me to post my first attempt at 3d modelling without being accused of copying...I just did a SketchUp of a saber "similar" to my Disciple! Nothing fancy or accurate just something I knocked up to get the hang of the software (Might mean no more ASP for Tyeth!)

These possible new ^^ hilts are gonna need some serious cram-fu though, the Apprentices are small enough inside as they are!.

kind regards,

For Tyeth

The Apprentice versions are perfect. I'll give the Tanto a pass.

That's awesome. I could have a "mini me" version of my Acolyte. :D

As far as I can tell, the body width and lengths are staying the same. The smaller sizes come from removing necks and/or reducing emitter blade depth.

Hi Kouri,

Yes I can see what you mean. But even Mrs T saw the downside of that. I said to her that the choke points/necks had been removed and her reply was "They're getting rid of one of the saber's USP's -unique selling point!"

And shortening the blade socket on a Disciple or Acolyte is a bad idea, unless they finally move the blade retention screw location!

kind regards,
For Tyeth

Some of the lower body length looks to be shortened, at least from the outside. Pommels look shorter and body length might be a hair shorter on some. internally they may be the same length (shorter threading perhaps).

Here is a better look at them!

Quote from Phil:
Sneak peek at the new Tanto Apprentice sabers. Full size disciple on the right to show scale. These average 8in, perfect for your off hand or a padawan.

Basically, a very short version of a sword. In this case, Saberforge is making shorter versions of Apprentice sabers. The Elite size sabers are the full size sabers, then followed by Apprentice (slimmer than Elite, i.e. narrower in diameter and slightly shorter on average). The Tanto are even shorter as pictured. The far right above pictures an Apprentice Acolyte.

You will probably need a shorter blade to go with the Tanto, because I am guessing a 37" blade will make the saber "blade heavy". Often a 37" blade makes an Elite size hilt balance itself nicely. WIth a Tanto, I am guessing you may a need a shorter blade for that. But of course, you can still use a 37" if you like. :)

A tantō is a Japanese dagger. Sometimes it's referred to as a sword, but it's really a dagger. They typically have short handles and short blades, usually the whole weapon is no more than 12 inches long. It will be interesting to see if they do a special shorter blade than their current smallest (main) blade, the 26-inch blade.

I think a 20" to 24" blade would be perfect for that.

BTW they look awesome.

Time to start "saving" (hiding money from the wife in my secret piggy bank) because I want one.

Did you guys noticed how addicting this hobby is? So unlike Jedi principles. Lol!

To split hairs, tanto is the style of blade. Since these are energy blades without points, these are more like a pirates main gauche, a short offhand defensive weapon held in the weak hand. But the same principal. :D

Main gauche was for fencers, but I suppose a pirate could use one. Personally I'd take a hanger and a boarding axe, but I digress.

An interesting idea, but I agree with the guys concerned about room. 8 inches seems to small for a saber to me anyway.

eh, to each his own.

As noted above, henceforth, these are Shoto hilts, rather than Tanto, and the link below will take you straight to the page on the main site where they can be acquired!

Those are all sweet. I'm sure I definitely need at least one of those in my life. I see that they come with an 18" blade standard, that's cool.

These look great. My friends have 3 kids (age 6 and two age 8 ) these would be perfect for. I even love they come with a slightly shorter 18" blade. I'd order them empty and build the electronics myself but you have to order warrior tier (or higher) to get the 18" blade. Anyone know if SF will add that blade option to the sales page for the V4??

Next time I get the chance, I will ask Phil about the blade length selection.

I asked, and he said it would indeed. He did not say exactly when, but as it is a pretty easy change, I would not imagine it would take too long.
