I'm not 100% this is the right place for this, but it seemed appropriate since it's nothing technical to do with our actual sabers.

I wanted to ask, though, who's given some thought to what kind of crystal focuses your saber(s)? And, if you don't mind, why is that your choice? If you're feeling particularly creative, maybe you could share a narrative about your Jedi/Sith persona acquiring or tuning their crystal...

I'm kind of looking for inspiration, as it's something I'd like to say I "know" about my saber when I get one, but I haven't decided what it might be.

The real question here is EU/Legends or Cannon. There was a ton of info and choices in eu with some nice stories. I haven't looked to see if there even are specific crystals or even how the construction even works in the new cannon.

At one point I remember the crystal being attuned to the user but now just about anyone (force senitive or maybe not) can use a completed saber.

Yeah, there's not a whole lot of detail on what's available in the new canon. The lore of Illum's crystals has changed such that they are colorless until chosen, and are referred to as kyber crystals. But until the examples from the EU are ruled out, I won't exclude them. Though I only saw references of crystals being attuned to specific users in the Star Wars: Galaxies material. Edit: Apparently synthetic crystals have already been excluded from canon.

Hi all,

And originally Lucas only used Crystals as a decoration on the outside of the hilt handle and had NO INFLUENCE on the internal functions of the blade or colouration. The Crystals were described as just decorative jewels!

Mine is green BTW.

When did this happen?

Sorta related: I've ordered some smoky quartz spires to create a sithy crystal blade plug for my Bane. If feel like it's a nice combo of crystal and hilt.

Sounds pretty cool! Have you done something like that before?

Hi h2soy,

I've found that this issue of canon/non canon is complicated as in ROTJ Luke had built his new Saber, however Lucas found a blue blade wouldn't show up well against the sky of Tattooine and changed the colour to green. Then it had to be explained why Luke's Saber was green and one explanation was that he manufactured the crystal as he had manufactured his Saber possibly from plans in Obi-Wan's home. During the "germination and meditation" the crystal took on the Green form. Computer game developers took the ideas of Crystals and colours further. When all that changed I'm not sure, but that was the history I had read.

p.s. some of this info is repeated on starwars.com on the page titled This Weapon is Your Life. A history of the Lightsabers of four historical Jedi. Dated 1st May 2015.

No, but it's not that hard to put together. You take a blade and cut it into 1.5"/2" pieces and then add greeblies/crystals to the top of the plug to your liking and glue them down. I got the crystal wholesale from a Chinese distributor on ebay (a lot cheaper than USA sellers for whatever reason... probably from the SW region of Africa where a number of Chinese companies run mining consortiums  ) so I'll hopefully have enough left over to make extras to sell. *shrugs* we'll see.

Good info For Tyeth and Borommakot. Some much EU canon is switching around I miss info more often than I'd like.

Pics of spires:

451 grams (about 15.91 oz, aka a grande cup from Starbucks) for about $25.

This is an important source, For, because it contradicts what I read about synthetic crystals. A little more digging, and I found that Pablo Hidalgo (who made the statement that there were no synthetic crystals) also made a point to put on his twitter account "Don't cite tweets as canon" so, I guess we can't take that at face value. Hopefully that door remains open to us.

Hi Borommakot,

I thought it sounded strange that synth crystals were no longer considered part of the Star Wars universe as Sith sabers had them and Luke's saber needed an explanation. Also being on the starwars.com site I felt the information had authority.
Glad I could help.
