Are there any groups which meet in the Portland area? I'd like to get together for some sparring, especially since I just put in the order for a Sinister Prophecy. :)

Now that Fall / Winter is upon us, it might be nice to find an indoor location. If anyone is out in the Hillsboro / Beaverton area, I might be able to convince my old dojo to rent us some space from time to time. All indoor with a large mat area.

I live in South East Portland, and I need somebody to spar with as well! I have very little skill or experience so far, but that's part of why I need to spar! You can only go so far with training at home. I know that Lucien Kane is going to be starting up classes again soon out in Oregon City. So I'm planning on going out there at least once a week.

You guys realize you live about 45-1 hour away from Saberforge right ?

At saberforge you have this awesome guy Daniel Lucien Kane Lane, who teaches light saber combat and I believe Sabeforge is even opening or thinking about opening a Saber Combat School. They are working on media for that.

I would give Mr. Lane a shot - if you can drive that far.

Oh trust me I know how good he is first hand! I've taken a few informal classes with Master Kane, here. And I've seen him spar with other people who are far better at this than I am. I am SUPER psyched about getting to go back to learning from him. Although it takes me a lot more than an hour to get there, because I can only travel by public transit. I have no car, and I don't know how to drive, either. XD

I've been looking for a group in Portland. If there's an academy opening up, I could wait for that. Are there any details on it floating around on line? I'm new to swordplay (well, it's been 20 years since I last did anything in that arena). :)

Cool, I just found out about this hobby after someone brought one to a party and showed how durable they were.

I have formal kendo training and would love to find a saber sparring group here in Portland.

I am out in Tigard and when I get a little more saved up I am planning to be getting a saber. So it seems I am to be throwing my hat in the ring for sparing. Or if the academy is still in the works it would be wonderful to get more information regarding that.

Hello all,

I have been looking off and on for a group to spar with semi-regularly and have come to the conclusion that I will have to try to form one...a few google searches later, I found saber forge and then this thread.

I am interested in a group which mutually consents to the development of skill through free-form sparring and Kata training. (I don't want to be involved in ego matches or pain matches) If I had to rate my skill, I would say that I am better than your average backyard saberist, but inferior to most serious formally trained swordsman.

I have been trying to develop forms I, II, III, and V with varying success. I have had a very small amount of training in Kendo, closest to Shii Cho, and saber fencing, closest to Makashi...aaaaand just for fun I'll mention that my allegiance probably lies with the dark Jedi or grey Jedi...I think there's something to the Dark Side. Not the Sith mind, the Dark Side...they're different! :P

Anyway,
I'm in the Beaverton area and am willing to drive about an hour (max) to a sparring location that is mutually agreeable to all involved. I have my primary saber in good condition, and three secondary sabers in fair condition, all with at least thirty inches of blade.

I am in the middle of finals and the holiday season so checking this forum may be sporadic...but I will get back to any responses when I can.

May the force be with you all,
Findecano

We are going to be opening the saber academy in Oregon City this month! As we kick more details out I'll make a post here!

I attended the inaugural session of Saberforge Academy at the new dojo located in Oregon City. We had two sessions with 9 or 10 students in each class.

Class was led by Master Lucien Kane. It consisted of warmups, a series of single strike and block exercises, paired up partners doing series of strikes and blocks, and then about a half hour of free sparring in two rings with refereeing done by the other students and supervised by Master Kane.

It was a BLAST.

There was a basic schedule and pricing sheet. Individual sessions led by Master Kane are $20 for an hour and $30 for an hour and a half.

There is also a monthly option that I think runs $200 for up to 16 sessions.

There will be a set of classes that run weekdays MWF and T THU with Saturday sessions set to have guest instructors. You can also choose to have the focus on fight choreography, or on a competitive sparring system. There are specified sessions for family (i.e.adults and kids together) or adult-only, so you can choose from among several options to customize your dojo experience.

Stay tuned. I'm sure there will be more info directly from the Source shortly.
