TFA has over 2100 special effects shots (more than any of the prequels). Here's an interview with some of the guys from ILM on the subject.

Also, any one of the prequels had more miniature work than the entire OT combined.

It'd be nice for that trend to continue into the actual movies...

IMO, a pike just wouldn't work as well. We've seen her be effective with a staff and while I'm sure you could translate some of that into pike work it's just a different beast. I'd much rather see her with a blue or green, or even amber would work really well, Maul style saberstaff.

Edit: Also it would be new to see a film jedi with a saberstaff, as well as a female with one. I'd said amber earlier just because it's not the typical blue/green that the majority of jedis have had, just as Rey will not be a typical jedi if she ever truly becomes one at all.
