I recently ordered some 3D printed 1/12 (6") scale lightsaber hilts and blades from Shapeways for another Star Wars project I'm working on (I initially showed them off in Borommakot's dremel thread). I just finished painting one as a test:

Material is Frosted Ultra Detail, which is a resin cured with UV light. First step was a 3 minute acetone bath and scrub to remove the waxy release agent that was left from the printing process. Next a few thin coats of silver, then a black wash, followed by the red buttons and a final wash.

Nice. Does it fit in a Lego man's hand? :)

Just a bit too big for that. ;)

Here it is with one of the blades painted blue with my slightly modified 6" Black Series Jakku Finn figure (just a jacket and arms swap from a Poe Dameron because his were nicer). The blade fits in well enough that it won't fall out if the hilt is upside down, but loose enough it leans with gravity.

Oddly enough, the blade fits perfectly into the handle of my X-Acto knife, which made for easy painting (the "white strong and flexible" material soaks up paint pretty easily).

Finished all the hilts.

A dual tone staff, a weathered with gold accents staff, a dark grey/brown Darth Talon hilt, a weathered generic Episode I hilt, a hero ROTJ Luke; and a slightly used with gold accents hilt. I won't paint blades for all of them unless I have a figure I want to give one to.

Recently got my Kmart/Sears exclusive TBS 6" Starkiller base Rey in the other day. Instead of her staff and BB-8, she comes with Anakin/Luke's lightsaber and a 2 snow base pieces, but since I already have a couple figures with blue lightsabers, and I really want to see her wield one, I'm giving her one of the staffs. I'm just deciding on blade color. I was initially thinking orange to be different, yet I'm also liking green, based in her reaction when arriving on Takodana.

That's remarkable work Jaden Korr. The parts are small yet you have successfully painted through such intricacy of said parts and with capturing the detail of colour scheme. I honestly doubt I'd have the patience to achieve what you have done. Do you require vision-magnifying headset or one of those movable magnifying lamps (like watch makers use) or is it just skill, small brushes and determination?

Well, you also have to factor in that Jaden has a really steady hand. Those look amazing. I like what you did with Rey's staff. Keep up the amazing painting job.

Thanks guys. The color scheme for that staff was partially inspired by the Vanquish. The only thing that I'd change about the staffs would be having the shrouds be opposite each other instead of mirrored. I could have cut them and reglued them, but I knew I'd never get them perfectly level.

The FUD plastic (after the acetone bath) actually take paint really well, which helps a lot. I used the basic Testors acrylic paints plus a model masters tan (used on the Talon saber). I bought some fancy brushes, but the cheap ones the paints came with work 100x better (though the fancy pointy one is still really useful for the buttons).

I'm nearing completion on the project I originally got the sabers for, so I'll post that over in the fan gallery once it gets moved it its new spot on the forum.

That would have helped a lot. My glasses/contacts prescription is so strong that things actually appear to be further away than they are (and without them everything is just a blur of colors).

Mom,

I'd believe that but then there was I time I once read about a 'ScrewDriver' incident that I won't elaborate on. Granted, I likened him to Wolverine possessing advanced healing, but who's to know other than he if that has left some 'shakes' when he bakes. ;)
