Hey folks, just wanted to start a little discussion about the belt clip system introduced (as far as I know) by Kylo Ren. Here's a DIYer's in depth look at it:

So what do you folks think are the pros and cons of this system, and how it compares to the covertec system? What comes immediately to mind is that it looks quicker to draw, and highly secure. On the other hand, it seems like it's pretty big, as a system, and takes up more hilt real estate than a covertec clip.

I haven't seen one in person yet, but it seems like this system will keep the saber rigidly pointed in one direction, which could be a hassle. Has anyone here used one?

I can't claim to have used one but I pretty much agree with what you said.

I think the main issue here would, as you say, be the size and rigidity of the thing. The best part of a covertech system is how easy it is to keep everything out of the way, and honestly, I'm not sure the extra draw speed is that advantageous.

However, in regards to mounting that on the saber hilt, it would be lower profile than a covertech knob by the look of it, making it potentially easier to hold the saber/ open up more grip options, as you could probably hold a comfortable enough grip around that, more so than you could with the large covertech knob.

Still, without seeing or testing in person I can't really offer that much insight, but it could certainly be an interesting alternative.

Hard to say without actually seeing it in person. I don't know what the dimensions of that thing but it doesn't look that much bigger than the new SF clip I received in the mail the other day.

Borommakot, thanks for the share. It's an interesting concept and personally, the comment you wrote about quick draw I see as a Pro and a Con. Watching the Video, there appears to be merit in the latching system and does require a quick exertion of force to remove it whilst still having a generous weight threshold to loosen it (bucket test) when stationary and idle.

Designed for crossguard Hilts, the Hilt itself wouldn't be shy on weight and the characteristics of the Hilt IMO would make it cumbersome and somewhat impractical to have clasped to your belt.

It reminds me of a Hammer that hangs from a Tradies belt. However with the Hammer's holster-ring, free movement is still enabled rather a fixed position that would nudge your leg as you walk.

I am reminded of a discussion exchanged recently specific to the New Belt Clip, Posted by RotundChap (which doesn't have a locking mechanism or fixed attachment that your belt loops through).

Vyk, wrote in that Topic that whilst the advantage of quick draw is present, this also makes it easier for passing-theft or by curious onlookers simply yanking it from the mount. I see this concern described present with the discussed Clip System.

With use at Cons or Cosplay (either with blade attached or without) I've always imagined the harness-style carriers more practical for this specific Hilt similar to large Swords/Medieval Weaponry.

So the more I think about this clip, the more I like it, and want to see it work more conveniently. It got me thinking. What is the plate that clip is attached to (and it could easily be reduced in size for this) was hinged at the top, to a clip? I'm probably gonna butcher this explanation, but if you have the clip attached to a rotating joint (giving the same forward-backward range of motion as a covertec clip), in turn attached to a hinged clip (offering side to side motion), you could get a final result that takes up no more space than a covertec clip system, while having the range of motion of a D ring.

A lot of moving parts, but I don't think it'd be as complicated as it sounds. So much so that I may or may not have ordered a resin replica of the clip to try it out.
