What did you discover was wrong with your saber? Good job!
The other saber (not the original one from this post) was having issues booting... would just flash the LED quickly, make some noises, then start over again and again. It was an ASP Graflex with the version of the sabercore soundboard before in hilt recharge was standard on these. After talking to CS and sending them a video, they had me send the switch section and soundboard in for repair.
The first time it got sent back to me, it came with the battery shrink wrapped around the soundboard, and new QC parts for in hilt recharge. Unfortunately, the graflex switch section (that they had in hand) wasn't drilled for a recharge port, so there was no way to actually use the new in hilt recharge feature. This left me without any way to charge the battery without disassembling the hilt. They also didn't include a charger with it... I had a couple others, but still worth noting as they had no way of knowing that I would have these on hand.
So I contacted CS again, they had me send switch and board back a 2nd time so they could drill the hole for the recharge port and install it in to the switch section. When I got it back the second time, they had indeed installed the recharge port in the activation box, then proceed to glue the damn cover card back to the switch thus making the recharge port completely inaccessible. So once again, I’m stuck without a way to actually charge the damn battery.
At this point, I wasn't going to go another round with this so I pried the card cover off. Apparently, they did a very good job gluing the cover card down, as it took far more force to pry that loose than I was expecting. There I discovered that there wasn't a kill key in the recharge port... nor did they include one of these new type of kill keys needed to fit this setup. Apparently, these aren't for sale anywhere yet through them either… still need to modify a standard kill key for this to work. Think I should be able to just trim one down in a lathe. I ended up looking at how the other activation box cards worked for these new setups, and decided to modify the card so that it would slide like those do. I took a standard key-ring, cut it with some linesman’s pliers to get a couple nice little arcs, glued those to the underside of the card, then shimmied it back in to the activation box. It works quite well now… stays in place for the most part until you slide it over just enough to access the recharge port.
I also went ahead and put in an aftermarket glass eye to complete that part of the aesthetics.
Unfortunately, these replacement electronics also have the new “rumble pack”. I strongly dislike this new feature, as it makes it so you can’t have it on display while the LED is lit without it rattling to high hell. I wish they would have included the ability to disable this function within the soundboard menu. There’s no way to turn it off to my knowledge. It also drains on the battery way harder. Just a gimmick that I’m not at all fond of.
I'm praying that I don't have a similar experience this time around... I've had really mixed experiences with SF's quality control on both the electronics and assembly end. I've had sabers show up in perfect working order, everything well assembled, and working flawlessly. I've also had them show up with laughably bad work on the assembly end: spurs from machining not ground down, sections not glued together, LEDs not properly secured, etc... I know there must be a lot of new staff with their expansion, but it's still crazy to me how inconsistent the quality has been on the 6 different sabers I have purchased from them.
Rant done...
