I initially passed over this Star Wars novel but on a recommendation from Shameem (Darth Mario) over on the Custom Saber FB group I picked it up.
It is, w/o a doubt, the most affecting, and mature, Star Wars novel I've read. Often SW novels are guilty of glossing over the effects of war on the people and worlds the novels visit. Lost Stars deals with some very heavy ideas about loss, honor, and suffering within the context of the SW universe. The author has a superb grasp on the psychology of fascism and fear and through the actions of the two main characters, Thane and Ceina (whose names I actually remember unlike the characters of Aftermath), she explores how rational people could support the Empire even up to the Battle of Endor. Thane, Ceina, and all of the secondary characters are immediate, endearing, and their decisions make sense within the context of their values and worldviews and don't shift depending upon the needs of the plot.
I heartily recommend this novel (and yes it does have TFA hints) on the shear grounds of it being an excellent novel; that it's SW related is a bonus.
