I'm sure you're wondering why I'm asking this questing in the first place, since these are high quality sabers that should be taken care of. Allow me to explain:

I don't drink. It's a stance that I've decided upon myself for years. My friends have been pestering me to drink with them for years, and I'm turning 21 this Monday the 14th. That means more pressure from them to go drinking with them. I'm also an amateur moviemaker, so I make whatever I think is cool or funny with what I have. I'm planning on making a video for my 21st, titled "Fours' First Drink," where the video fades in to a close-up of a bottle of Heineken (because that one's apparently the worst beer) on a table while Binary Sunset or the ending music of Revenge plays. As the music builds up lingering on the shot of the bottle, it suddenly cuts off at the climax, which is when I just smash the bottle from the side with my saber. Camera switches to a wide shot of me swinging at the bottle, and if it arrives on time, another switch to a GoPro mounted onto the saber's hilt for a POV shot. Bottle will either go flying or get broken apart, but I don't really care what happens to it; not my bottle, anyways.

And that is that. If saber blades don't hold up against bottles then I'll probably get a golf club from Goodwill or something, but hey, Star Wars in ten days.

I've seen them hit trees so they should stand up to glass with only a few scratches i'd be more worried about flying glass

Agreed with Dav here. Might be a few scratches here and there but they should hold up no problem at all.

I don't agree on the beer though ...

You want bad beer? Depending on where you live:
Europe: Kronenbourg, 1664, or what I call hobo's beers, look for a brand with ships (Amsterdam), whatever the level of alcohol, I'm pretty sure those are the worst.

North America: Bud light mate ... That's water that hides by putting on a fancy bottle and saying it's beer.

Australia: XXXX, Foster's (though this one is hard to find in Aussie), VB too...

But Heineken, in my opinion of course, is far from being the worst! It's not as tasty as a Chimay might be, or even a Leffe, but there are worse things on this planet than Heineken, trust me :p

Coors lite or any of the cheap US beers like Milwaukee's Best, all in all like sex in a canoe---in other words F'n close to water. :P Or as I say more piss water than beer.

Word of advice, if your going to do it once just to shut your friends up on the drinking front. You might as well get a buzz or drunk, and just get it over with. Fastest way to get there is to drink on an empty stomach. After your lit up, start drinking water the rest of the night and eat food so that you don't get a nasty hangover in the morning.

I never drank alcohol myself nor had been drunk till the LucasFilm/Disney layoffs back in 2013. That was a learning experience, but I had the right people around me to make sure I didn't regret it in the end.

I took 3 shots of Rumplemintz 100 Proof, and I was done. On an empty stomach. I might relive that experience once Star Wars comes out to theaters, because frankly it's been one hell of a rough road sticking it out to the end.

I have been witness to mishaps involving shattering glass bottles, and it was pretty horrific. So, I would advise you to exercise some caution if you are going to do this, not only for yourself, but also anyone in the near vicinity. Don't let it turn into one of those fateful nights that you regret for the rest of your days. You would be surprised how easily an experience can go that way, when the prevailing thought is "What could go wrong?"
Imagine what you will know tomorrow....

I'm not much of a drinker so my advice here is limited. Here goes:

1. Smoke a blunt
2. Turn on saber
3. Stare at it for hours with silly grin on face.
4. Repeat

Didn't quite answer your question about the blade vs bottle scenario, but no glass to clean up this way! :cheer:

Wait, what was the original question? I forgot already! :P

If I understand the original post, you will not be drinking, but instead making a short film to show your mastery over peer pressure by "cutting" the beer with your saber.

It might be a safer and more interesting experiment to make a prop mold and create a thin sugar glass bottle to put the label on to smash instead. It's a bit safer and more likely to break.

I would not recommend the glass beer bottle as they are quite sturdy and your not likely to get as exciting of an effect. Not to mention safety.

How about a can of beer instead. I think that is less likely to damage your blade (or others) and will likely give a better dent and spray effect.

As for the saber I don't have mine yet so I can't say if any of this could damage the blade maybe try on a cheap (softer wood) broom or paint roller extension handle (find at a hardware store) first and check for scaring on that.

I apologise for intruding on this thread but I have worked in the Theatre and Performing Arts world and agree with Artair.

If you can make a Sugar Glass Bottle that would definitely be the way to go, (some theatres actually BAN glass bottles etc on stage, and in bars in the UK they are beginning to use Plastic beer glasses more widely!)

It is admirable the stand you want to make and the message, but at the end of the day you don't want to make a spectacle for the wrong reason!

PLEASE STAY SAFE!

My initial plan was to go on top of the parking garage of the public library on the side next to the empty and mostly deserted train yard (seriously, there's like twenty traintracks that lead nowhere, it's like a movie set). On the wall that faces the train yard I'm just gonna make the bottle go away (since obviously it's not gonna break that easily) after the swing, going down about forty feet to the ground. There won't be any glass for me to clean up and I'm there weren't any hobos when I scouted the place earlier today.

I'm Asian, the only beer in my house is Heineken! lol

It's really a morality choice for me, plus I want my liver to live long.

I don't have any cans around me, so there's that about using something less likely to damage my blade :(

I don't exactly know how to make sugar glass, but I'm gonna look it up. I gotta ask though, is there a site that I can order them from?

Edit: okay they're $13 a bottle pre-shipping screw that I've already spent enough on these sabers

Buying a SugarBottle may be a bit much, however you can make one (Or at least half!)

1) Wash and dry a beer bottle, then grease it as if greasing a baking tin.

2) Make up some sugar syrup mixture like you would for Spun Sugar or Toffee/Candy Apples.

3) Fill the bottle with warm water (NOT HOT WATER JUST WARM) This prevents it from shattering!

4) CAREFULLY AS MIXTURE WILL BE HOT! Pour mixture over bottle so it coats ONE side of bottle and allow to cool.
This will create a "SHELL" or one side a bottle which when cold can be carefully trimmed. If placed face on to the camera it should appear as a whole bottle. You can apply a label using dabs of sugar solution as glue. The shell should peel off quite easily because of the grease.

I will however state that this is normally the sort of thing professionals would do so may still be hazardous, but I feel this is the safest method you could use.

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS USE SAFETY GOGGLES AND PROTECTION!

5) Hopefully you should have a STAGE BOTTLE that is MUCH safer to break than glass!

Good luck

Thanks for the instructions on making sugar glass, but that seems complicated for me. I've got friends around that should have a few cans of beer lying around, so I could probably ask them about using one.

Eye protection will most likely be me using some goggles lying around.

Yes I can't stress that enough about protection (Eye goggles and gloves!) if you're intent on carrying out your stunt.

Sorry it wasn't much help in the end but I didn't want you or anyone else getting injured (no matter how noble the message is) doing something risky as breaking glass!

I will repeat,

PLEASE STAY SAFE, and hope to hear from you in the future.

BTW I'm FORTY on the 17th so Happy Birthday for the 14th!

I'm with For on this one, whatever you choose to do please do it safely and make sure to wear proper safety gear for the situation including eye protection.

I was once an art student so I understand that some creative expression comes with risks, just be sure to minimize them and have a plan incase things go wrong.

Also I salute your choice to stay sober.

One night of a few drinks will not do anything to your liver. Excessive drinking will. It wasn't till I was 37 and special circumstances that I ended up just saying screw it and giving it a try. Did it make me an alcoholic, No. Did I put up with years of people making fun of me not drinking, yes and still do when I go to the local dive bar to visit co-workers after work. I still to this day don't really drink alcohol as I see no reason for it, it's expensive and just not worth feeling woozy. At some point you may or may not break down and give it a try. But to claim it will make your liver live longer from abstaining from one night worth of drinking is a false pretense. Either way, just be safe. I felt the same way at 21, but things change over the years. You may or may not drink at some point.

Totally with you on this one, up until some point ... Let me explain my meaning.

I'm French, we more or less have wine instead of blood in our veins. So yeah ... When I was 3, my parents would dip their fingers in champagne and have me suck on it for special occasion, like Christmas. I don't remember it, they told me they did.
When I was 6 or 8, sometimes my dad would let me have a sip of his beer (mind you, light ones like Kronenbourg or Heineken, stuff around 4 or 5 degrees)
And now I've started recalling all those memories, man I started young xD

I could have a sip of wine from times to times around 12, and my first full glass of wine (one per meal & on special occasions only) not before 15.
It's when I turned 18 that my parents "actually" let me drink alcohol.

Before that, or after, I have never seen the point in getting fully drunk, puking all over the place and not remembering shit from my night. Some people do, I don't get it. However, when you're Sam (the nickname we give in France to the driver for parties), it can be a lot of fun as long as you put safety first. For example, I have friends who, to this day, are absolutely certain they did this or that because I told them so, but they don't remember it because they did not do it :woohoo:

Did this underage drinking make me an alcoholic? Absolutely not. On average, I drink one beer a day (half a pint worth of volume), and if I don't, I might have a small glass of whisky.
I know where my limits are, I do not go anywhere near them as I want to be aware of what happens around me so I don't do any stupid and/or risky stuff that might get someone (me involved) injured or hurt in any way.
Then again, I'm French. And we drink alcohol on a daily basis because it's not just for celebrating, it's also for living :)

We have a saying in France that says: Most countries in the world eat and drink to live. French people live to drink and eat.

I'm pretty sure that if you look at the average wine or alcohol consumption per capita in France, we might have one of the highest ones. If you look at the actual alcoholism in society, I don't think we're doing too bad. But I'm making assumptions here, I didn't research any data to corroborate this.

Have a glass or two, that'll shut your friends up, you'll know what alcohol and drinking are like, and you won't, in ANY WAY, damage your liver, trust me/us on that ;)

But then again, it's your choice. If you do not want to drink at all, suit yourself mate :)

Warning Old Git Alert!

Sorry to barge in again but I feel you have a decision to make that in the end only you can make (bit like choosing a saber that suits you, but more serious).

You have the choice to drink or not, your friends should respect your decision either way!

Having a sociable drink with responsible friends in a safe environment shouldn't harm you, but you need to decide.

With experience (and knowledge) you may decide to be a drinker later.

You appear to have misgivings on the idea already, so I would suggest you only start to drink AS AND WHEN YOU'RE READY.
Peer pressure is not a nice thing to endure and your friends should understand your position. Good friends will look after your best interests and support you.

All I can add is whatever your decision, I wish you well and just please be safe.(Either drinking or performing stunts!)

In fact I'm relying on you for info and updates into any extra customs charges or delays.
Your sabre should be getting into the UK pretty soon. So I'm gonna be asking questions

My sabre has been through all sorts of hold ups and weirdness since I ordered on Aug 24. The SF guys have been quick to respond though. I believe Kevin G is on the case.

Here's hoping your toblerone is imminent.
