What do you all think of lightsabers made out of different materials like wood and rancor teeth
I like the idea of the rancor/bone sabers and I think they'd translate fairly well into real world materials that would be durable enough for dueling:

Wood... Wood is iffy. You'd need a hardwood and even then wear and tear/heat would work the thing over pretty well. Maybe as a shelf queen.

There's something very pleasing about that whole organic/ synthetic amalgamation.
Bone with metal shrouding.

And as a DIY project I'm sure it's something some ( not me) could have a go at.

Saying that, not sure if SF would be happy about having someone using their parts and electronics to add to homemade wooden hilts, may be some copyright issues there (Knytiri ?)

This would only be problematic if the parts were copied, reproduced, and then sold. Another questionable scenario would be someone buying SF sabers, sheathing them in a wood shell, and reselling them as their own product. As long as it's for personal use (and not resale) you wouldn't be skirting any sort of grey area. If you wanted to sell just the wood shell for use with a SF hilt or create components that match the threading on SF hilts for commercial purposes you would want to get their blessing first, otherwise that would be a highly suspect dick move and SF would have every right to go HAM.

Part of the custom saber scene is that people take components from multiple sources and make their saber their own; it's part of the charm. Extreme body mods and any sort of tinkering on the internals will void the SF warranty but if you don't care about that the saber is yours to do with as you please. Buying a hilt and then commissioning someone to do the body mod would be kosher too.

Can't think of his name right now but he did an awesome bone deco on a bane

I think wood would work as long as it was used on the grip and kept away from the emitter

Tough thing about wood, even if it is only used to encase the actual emitter assembly, is that it is hard to get it thin enough to be aesthetically pleasing, while remaining strong enough not to be damaged by the forces created when dueling. Even hardwoods will break around the thin parts surrounding the metal parts.

I think I agree with the above post that said it would make for a fantastic shelf queen, but probably a little impractical for a dueler. Likely, the same would apply to most organic materials, but that is my take based on my experience with wood.
Imagine what you will know tomorrow....

It would be better to paint it to look like wood or a laminate or dip

This guy's saber's are incredibly detailed and beautiful, but incredibly overpriced, also he doesn't build commissioned saber's if he doesn't like the design or idea. Although, he has near perfected a "bone" structure he made for some of his saber designs. Check it out, this one is made from a Krayt dragon tooth:http:

When I worked at B&Q Hardware store (admittedly 20 yrs ago) they sold a paint product that replicated wood grain in various colours. This if I remember correctly was used by people to paint radiator/heater covers and panels where wood would scorch or burn. Not sure if it's still available but it did look effective. I'll look it up if you like.

I know the sabersmith's name but not sure if I can post it in case I'm advertising but you can just make out his shop's name in the corner of your pics!

I guess you're right. These saber's are beautiful but the smith is very particular. He doesn't produce the saber's in quantities like SF, all or most his saber's are one-of-a-kind. Also, he doesn't sell them to just anyone, he auctions them off to the highest bidder.

Hi all,

I have found an Instructables video showing how to simulate wood grain on an aluminium (two I's I'm from England, haha!) metal box. Just search for simulating wood grain on aluminium.

I'm fairly sure using different colours and combing/stippling tools would produce different finishes etc.

But let's make sure we don't put Justin out of a job here!

Good idea, it's best that we hand these ideas over to administration or to Justin, and other staff. Y'know, let the professionals handle the saber building part? But it can't hurt to try!

Hi again,

I was kidding, we need Justin!

Trying out saber modification is OK as a project (prolly when the warranty has passed!) to make your saber more like your personality.

These sabers are incredibly stylized. Upper end customz are expensive for sure. However self modified is a tricky endeavor. Over time incorporate a crystal chamber. Then later add shattered weathering damage reveal. Over time for sure but not right away.

Hello again =Ottomatix=,

Thank you for your advice, the journey to a personalised saber is a long and tricky path. Thankfully for those who choose to attempt such work, they have people like yourself and the many others on this site to look up to and importantly learn from!

Then there are people like me who just admire and dream, haha!

Thanks again and please all keep posting,

Pretty sure I've used that in the past For Tyeth. Came with a plastic spreader or comb that you varied the pressure on to create wood effect. It worked really well.
This whole thread has got me eager to have a go carving a hilt. Purely decorative.
Would be time consuming but man, you could go to town on it for minimal cost.

Hi xyster,

That's the stuff I meant. However I don't remember if it specifically mentioned for use on metal. There are the new products mentioned in the online videos around. And aluminium garage doors get wood grain treatments so I imagine that process could be scaled down to lightsaber hilts, maybe!

Regarding carved hilts, a word of caution..my uncle had a woodworking lathe, and I asked if he'd make a saber for me.

He said sure.

I received a Baseball Bat! (apparently he was still learning!)

I hope you have better luck,
