A simple honeypot to stop bots will do. You can trap about 99% of them with an invisible name field. Bots will be attracted to fill it in - even though it's invisible on the displayed registration. If its blank, its human. If its filled in, its a bot - auto-reject, delete, ban by email, etc. Heck you can even leave it displayed with a note that says "leave blank" but its field will be named "name" or "email" or whatever. Users will follow directions on the displayed page, bots will follow the input ID on the page's source.
The rest can be nabbed by querying known honeypot databases for nefarious IPs. Unless it's a brand new spammer at a new IP, a human at his keyboard, 99% of them will be eliminated before completing registration. You can literally throw capcha out the window at that point. Lots of cool peeps here and I think SF are some great folks so it sucks to see the forum getting defaced. |

If that's the case, then that's hilarious.  Too bad the stupid thing is such a nuisance. But then, such is the way with spambots. Something I still don't get are the spam about marriage and love and junk. What in blazes does love have to do with a cult?!

Gorobulus replied to one of them to joke around but I think he got caught up in the tidal wave of bans (his ban reason states he was a bot). I haven't seen many other replies though, mostly just views.
