Hello there everyone!

My first topic here. Just bought my first saber last week. Can't wait to get my hands on it :)

So the thing is...I'm planning in going to the next star wars celebration in London around July, and I want to bring my saber with me (I hope I'll have y saber before that).

Anyone knows how easy/hard is to travel with a saberforge light saber? Since they're made of metal. (I bought the disciple and I've heard about the sharp edge)

I started to wonder if I'll be allowed to bring it in a bag with me or if I'll need to check it in a luggage....

Anyone have any hints to me?

Thanks!

Oh, that's awesome! Going to London for that would be something I too would like to experience.

I don't know. My initial thoughts are to check it in with your baggage. That way is the best for something like this in my honest opinion. A custom lightsaber isnt something people usually see carry around.
The Force existed long before the Jedi and Sith united under the light and dark.
It will be here long after these empires crumble...

I'd have to agree, with the state of things nowadays, carrying something with hidden electronics in the shape that it is may garner some unwanted attention. Your best bet is probably just to check it in your luggage.

Hi Bircos,

I would contact the travel company you plan to get your travel tickets from and ask them, explain the situation.

Regarding the Disciple itself the build quality is fantastic and the edges you mention aren't as bad as you might think, I have a Disciple myself. (Reviewed in the "My Disciple 12w Green Reptile Wrap Arrived" topic in the reviews, if you want a few pics and info on it)

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the answers!

Yeah I think I'll need to check it in.
I'll sent them an email anyway with pictures just to make sure.

Thanks!

Just a thought on Driving around and just trying to keep lightSabers safe. Go to a Used Sports good store, buy a Baseball bat and glove bag. Lots of room and easy to carry numerous sabers safely

Well traveling with the hilt is no issue but the blades themselves are the main one. I think that something like a soft guitar/bass case (or hard solid) to travel with it safety. Hell you could roll up some clothing or add something like bubble wrap to keep it compressed and safe.

That's what I would do.

The sleeve you put hilts in is made to carry Baseball bats. And yes, "brain farted that" the bubble wrap is a good idea. In my case I'd be taking 3 sabers out at once and this seemed like an easy way to do it.

Well for the hilts I think that the case that SF sells on Etsy is quite nice. But if you have the space for it or don't mind carrying it as it is.

Uncertain if you'll have the same success and cannot see why it wouldn't work for you also. My recent experience, flew down to Melbourne from Sydney, with two Hilts and blades for two and half days. Cool Uncle, visiting nephew with Lightsabers! B) , anyway-the two I took didn't have claws but if did I would have removed them and popped them into a zip-lock baggy separated.

Unsure how you keep your laundry packed in a suitcase specific to socks, but I've seen them either folded or rolled into a ball. I basically fitted multiple pairs of socks over the hilt by alternating each end with a new sock until I was satisfied with the thickness of the padding. Basically repeated this for the other Hilt. I figured socks would get worn or used and if packing bubble wrap, just became unnecessary bag filler and weight.
Once the two were sufficiently bound, I then wrapped two T-shirts over them holding them as one unit. The blades I didn't want to risk indirect damage (after watching Customs/Border Control/Baggage Handlers TV shows) so I picked up a cardboard mailing tube from the local Post Office and much like carrying a rolled piece of canvas or artwork took it onto the plane with me as carry-on luggage.

No dramas departing. No dramas arriving. Effective & inexpensive. (less the cost of the tube)

Froboy696's suggestion is a good one. A specialised product intended for specific use.

I pondered this at the time but didn't want to carry an extra item. An alternative, depending on your suitcase size and how full it's packed, (don't know if you've got Retail Outlets in the US that would sell them but I imagine you would) is to pick up two pre-cut squares of convoluted foam and place them sandwiched in the centre of your case with clothes on either side.
You're essentially mimicking the case idea without the outer shell. Your local Arts & Crafts store 'should' sell adhesive Velcro strips (also used for securing runaway cushions on your couch).
Get long lengths to wrap two over the layered foam. Velcro is reusable. Or just use packing tape, cut and discard after each open and then tape again.
;)

Good topic,

You're not the first to have this question. The saber cases are REALLY nice for the hilts but do nothing for the blades. If you're traveling on a plane I agree that the best option is to check them with the luggage. It's not just about the 'sharp' edges but someone could see it as a metal tube/blunt club-like weapon. Nothing would be worse than trying to board the plane and have an issue.

There are lots of other ways to carry them too. The base ball bat bag was mentioned but strikes me as a bit large for a single saber. I have seen them in padded poster or drafting tubes. A padded pool cue carrying case also works well. Either way you can have it checked as a special item on the plane like people do with skis, musical instruments, and scuba gear so it doesn't get damaged with the regular bags.

Although its not London, a similar post reported that full sabers are allowed at Disney World, just FYI

I'd love to see someone try to explain their Juggernaut hilt is just a prop and not an axe to the TSA.

I have heard of people getting to take their saber on a plane, but it i think it was a less threatening one like a Gladius.

And it may be because I've watched too much Mythbusters and Burn Notice, but I was just thinking that a sick-minded individual could cram a decent amount of C4 into a saber hilt.

Hi all,

It happens to everyone, even Wookies...

And yes Jaden Korr "Heineman" I think you should just stick to watching the Mythbusters Star Wars episode!
The one with Sophia Bush and Stormtroopers.

If you are flying to London from the states put it in your checked baggage. Our TSA is something that really irritates me. They have no oversight and very little training. Technically if the guy just wanted your saber he could classify it as dangerous and deny you entry to the terminal unless you forfeited it. You don't always have time to go back to your car to save things. I have heard to many horror stories about TSA and travel. I personally haven't experienced any but I try to fly with as little as possible.

What I ended up doing last year when I went to San Diego Comic Con was take the train down due to restrictions and whatnot with flight traveling. My suggestion, is that if you are going to a con that is even 8 hours away and are bringing sabers, it is much easier to pack them and drive. If you must take a flight, I would recommend a rifle bag, as they are padded and some have sleeves which can be used for the blades.

I've been thinking about purchasing a Pelican case for my hilt

The model 1170 or P1075 seems to be pretty good

Fishing pole travel case.!! Many different styles from hard to soft case single to multiple price ranges 20 up to 100 depending on the model. a little less conspicuous then a gun case in the airport. Call your carrier ahead of time and tell them what you are traveling with then show up an hour early and let them check it or give you permission to carry on. My ¢.02
