Since when did they stopped allowing 12w+ to be added to sabers. I sent an email along with my new order on December 29th to get one and it took them two weeks to tell me they can no longer make changes. So now I'm stuck with the sucky 6w LED.

I believe the default is 12w, not 6w, but I could be wrong. And as far as I know, the 12w+ is still available. If you were told that it can no longer be added to your order, then it is likely because of where your saber is on the production line.

This is the reply I got after requesting the 12w+.

Hello! Unfortunately, due to recent policy changes, we are unable to make changes to existing orders. You have two options available to you. You can either A) Cancel you existing order and place a new one. This will reset your lead time. Or, B) Wait for your saber to arrive, and sent it in at a later date for upgrades. Please let us know how you'd like to proceed.

I selected the 6w on the order page because I thought I would just be able to upgrade it. Oh well...

They are in the process of switching over to the 12w+ as one of their standard offerings, so this is kind of a transition phase. If you got quick connects, you can just order a 12w+ and swap it out yourself. If not, you would have to send it in for the change to maintain the warranty.
Imagine what you will know tomorrow....

I'm looking into buying my first saber and I noticed this change as well. I e-mailed them asking if I can get the 12W+ if I order a new saber right now and just got this reply today:

"Hello! Just select the 12W when you place your order. The 12W has been replaced with the 12W+."

I'm a newbie here so this might be a stupid question, but is there anyway to know whether it's 12W or 12W+ once I get it?

Yeah I guess you're right. But I'm a little confused because I was looking into ordering the Hero version of the Prodigal Son with the RGBA option so I could customize the color. Does the 12W+ stuff not apply to a Hero edition with the RGBA option? It mentions mixing 3-6W colors. Does that mean it wouldn't be as bright as a 12W+ Champion edition?

Sorry I'm not entirely certain about the RGBA and its wattage and how it affects the brightness.

Hero RGBA involves loosing brightness because it is made up of four 3w LEDs giving a total of 12w. Depending on how you combine the R, G, B and A, you will obviously not get 12w (unless you combine R+G+B+A). So the majority of the time, you are combining two or three LEDs thus giving 6w or 9w respectively.

In my view, I want the brightest LED for each color and I am more than happy to settle for one only LED color per saber (most sabers come with Quick Connects, which lets you swap out for a different single color too). While the Hero is nice as it gives you theoretically an infinite color combination, it comes as sacrificing some brightness. I do not own a Hero saber but folks who do are still very happy with the brightness overall.

Ooooooh, does anyone know if 12W is now 12W+ due to integration??? That'd be so wizard.

I can't help too much but what I do know is that ASP Sabers were all supposed to be 12W+. How that affects current orders I don't know, sorry.

Is the price for sending a saber in for a LED upgrade after 12w+ released still 25 dollars? I plan on upgrading soon.

I sent in my one saber for some changes to the electronics, among them 12w+ LED. SF hasn't been in contact with me about the changes, other than my initial quote. I didn't know when it would ship back to me, and it turns out the post office tried Monday and left a slip about it. Apparently, no ones checked the mail since then and I requested a redelivery for today.

I'll post an update when I receive it if they gave me 12w+ or not.

I'm still not sure who to believe because a couple months ago Knytiri flat out said "The 12W+ Will not replace the 12W. It will release at the same time as the ASP and will be available for an additional $5 instead of $25". But yesterday Melissa told me the exact opposite (that 12W+ has replaced 12W).

Let me start by saying i am not from saberforge so i may be wrong.

My understanding is the 12w+ LED unit uses the same 4 LED configuration but are arranged in a closer pattern with either a new lense or just being closer to center allows better control/angle of the light beam.

I expect as a business they have a certain amount of stock of the 12w LEDs to use that are still a wonderful product. So there is no reason to throw that stock away when you can sell it.

I imagine that once that stock is depleted everything will become 12w+ as there is likely not enough of a diffrence in material cost to justify re-ordering parts for the original 12w in order to offer both options.

As for changes to orders. I think i read somewere that PayPal disliked how they were handling the addon costs of order changes so that may no longer an option for them. Also they are so swamped they may have stoped allowing after sale customizations to simplify their process since they are so swamped with work at the moment.

That was my thought as well Artair, which is why I was surprised Melissa told me "Just select the 12W when you place your order. The 12W has been replaced with the 12W+.". I have a funny feeling if I do that right now I'm going to get a 12W, not a 12W+. I might just hold off for now rather than roll the dice.

There's a few other key differences between the 12W and 12W+. The upgrade is, I believe, based around transitioning to Cree XB-D LEDs to Cree XP-E LEDs, which have higher luminous flux ratings and a tighter viewing angle but are twice the size and ~$0.60 more expensive per unit.

Another good news for customers : I ordered 3 weeks ago and this is an email i sent to saberforge : I learned about 12w+ LEDs after ordering but i didnt found the way to chose it during the order. I ordered everything in 12w ( the two with the sabers are cyan and a mint and another blood orange LED in addition ) will it be the new 12w+ or is that possible to change for it ?

The answer : Hello!  If you ordered 12W, you will receive 12W+.

So this is a good new and i think saberforge should be more precise on the website ( the FAQ about LEDs is not updated for example )
