regularly bathe it in the tears of the innocent and lamenting women to keep in top killing performance.
Also, I find a soft clean cloth helps in removing dust and fingerprints. I find that Magic Erasers work great to clean the blade on removing mild scuffs from regular use as well as removes marks left from the coloured plastics of children's lightsabers/ other toy weaponry they try to smite you with.
I have a lithium ion battery so I don't remove it, but I tend to use it regularly and recharge oncee fully drained when I know I plan to use it again. It's a good idea to fully drain those lithium batteries once in a while, though it does not have to be done often.
Rechargable batteries have indeed come a long ways since I was a weee padawan. Leaving Li-Ion on the charger when not in use is not nearly as bad as it used to be, particularly with smart chargers capable of stopping the charging process once the battery is full. Old chargers would just keep pushing and damage the battery, which is no longer the case.
I do not leave it plugged in all the time though, as doing so can very slowly damage a battery over a long period of time. so I just charge it up over night, unplug it in the morning and leave it unplugged until it won't turn on at all and I know it's drained. But leaving it on the charger is fine so long as you're not doing it nonstop all the time.
