What are some useful tips to make sure my saber is taken care of, clean, keeping it working properly, etc...

Don't let anyone touch it. Keep it on a shelf. Remember to save a copy of your settings on a computer, buy a SD card, format it. Copy the settings on your new card. Don't use it for a hammer. Don't use it to stir for your drinks. it should stay like new for a long time that way ;) lol

Canned air and a microfiber cloth works pretty well for me.

Soft, slightly damp hand towel to wipe off dust and fingermarks does it for me, no chemicals needed.

how about battery wise? With things like this, I usually take the battery out when I don't plan on using it for a while

For Alkalines (if you've got the AAA pack), definitely don't store them inside the saber if you're not using it, since they're prone to leaking a basic solution that'll corrode your electronics.

For lithium-ion (if you've got an 18650), I've heard conflicting information. Battery websites say they should be stored outside any device at about 80% charge. Some sabersmiths recommend leaving them in the charger to keep them in tip-top shape. I've not done the testing myself.

regularly bathe it in the tears of the innocent and lamenting women to keep in top killing performance.

Also, I find a soft clean cloth helps in removing dust and fingerprints. I find that Magic Erasers work great to clean the blade on removing mild scuffs from regular use as well as removes marks left from the coloured plastics of children's lightsabers/ other toy weaponry they try to smite you with.

I have a lithium ion battery so I don't remove it, but I tend to use it regularly and recharge oncee fully drained when I know I plan to use it again. It's a good idea to fully drain those lithium batteries once in a while, though it does not have to be done often.

Rechargable batteries have indeed come a long ways since I was a weee padawan. Leaving Li-Ion on the charger when not in use is not nearly as bad as it used to be, particularly with smart chargers capable of stopping the charging process once the battery is full. Old chargers would just keep pushing and damage the battery, which is no longer the case.

I do not leave it plugged in all the time though, as doing so can very slowly damage a battery over a long period of time. so I just charge it up over night, unplug it in the morning and leave it unplugged until it won't turn on at all and I know it's drained. But leaving it on the charger is fine so long as you're not doing it nonstop all the time.

Hopefully more people continue to post their thoughts on this topic!
