Hi,

Has anyone got any pics and/or recommendations concerning thin neck sabers and blade length?

I've been reading a few posts stating that the light from a thin neck noticeabley dims towards the end of the blade.

Now I've ordered a Redeemer with the longest blade, 37 inch I believe, and Im thinking of maybe opting for the 32 inch blade as the worry sinks in.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I think that 12w+, which is now being put in all orders, greatly alleviates this problem. You shouldn't have much to worry about there.

EDIT: Now, he answered in much greater detail, and therefore had to type more, but For Tyeth, cancel that bumper sticker, because I beat Brax!

Thin-neck sabers are, according to the experts (and this is with the 12w LED) about 10% less bright than a standard saber. This is due to the fact that the LED is located beneath the thin portion of the emitter, so the light is constrained to that tube. It has reflective mylar film to help catch and reflect more available light from the LED, but the width of the tube is really the limiting factor. The 12w+ LED reduces this effect a bit, because the individual LED dies are closer together, and so tend to shine more towards the center naturally.

As for blade length, it comes down to preference. I find that the 32" blade is easier to handle in dueling, but the 37" provides better balance. Of course that depends on the specific model you get, as they tend to differ slightly in overall length. If your major concern is brightness, I would say the best thing you could do to maximize that is to pop for the 12w+ LED, which should allow you to get which ever length blade works best for what you use it for, and the tip should be uniformly bright all the way up!
Imagine what you will know tomorrow....

I have a Redeemer 12W+ deep blue, and both 32" and 37" blades for it. I haven't noticed any appreciable difference in brightness between the two different blade lengths. As far as brightness overall goes, I'd say if anything it's perhaps too bright with the 12W+. I know that may sound odd, but it's actually kind of distracting and makes me lose any night vision if I'm spinning it due to it making my pupils contract. It takes a couple seconds to recover vision after the blade passes in front of my face. I'd honestly prefer if I could tone it down 20% or so. It's perfectly well lit even in full sunlight with either blade length.

The one thing that I would mention is that due to the thin neck blade socket being so shallow, the 37" blade is a bit unbalanced with the center of gravity about 5-6" from the emitter, and it honestly looks a little disproportionate with that long of a blade. With the 32" blade, the center of gravity is right at where the blade meets the emitter, and handles MUCH better than the 37:. I honestly think a 34" would be ideal for these hilts, and I'm going to modify a blade to test this out sometime soon.

I like my sabers super bright, so I have 12w+

And I like my blades long to resemble the movies. I don't duel. All I do is spin. So 37" for me.

Thanks for the feedback!

At 6,1ft maybe the longer blade is the way to go especially as there isn't a lot of difference with the 12 watt that i've ordered.

I think the most the saber will be used for is twirling like Execute66. There will be a few marks on the ceiling when this bad boy arrives!

I am 6'3" and find the 37" to not only be ideal, but feel more accurate to the movies as a saber blade is 'typically' 1 meter in length. Balance point is pretty good, and even with the 'old' standard 12W LED my blade is pretty bright. Only when my battery starts to wear down does it get somewhat noticeably dimmer near the tip, but you have to know what to look for to spot it.

If you plan to solely spin, 32" might be more ideal as the balance point will be a bit closer to the emitter instead of a few inches past it up the blade.

I don't tend to spin much other than feeble attempts as the plum flower (?) from Episode 2/3 for honing control. I tend to run through kata I used to know from early stages of katana/cane fighting training I took years ago. If I do spin it's only with the kids out as they like how it looks at night.

Just watched a review of the blade length by Lt Killerteacup (you tube ID) and the 32 looks great. Hmmm looks like poor saberforge might be getting an email.

Thanks for your help.

I finally had a chance to modify that 34" blade for the thin neck emitter, and think it's about perfect for me on this hilt, as I found the 37" made the balance a little too tip heavy, and and 32" a bit too short. This blade is a little lighter than the SF infinity V4, so it keeps the balance point right at where the hilt meets the blade. Removing some of the diffusion film to make it fit the thin neck emitter was far easier than I had imagined it would be.

Cheers for the pic. Your sabers a beauty! I've updated my order for the 32 due to feedback - better balance and better lighting of the blade.
