Considering you've been at it for a year now, how easy or difficult would it be to add something like engraved text to one of these hilts?

Wow, that is way more difficult than I thought it would be. I can do an engraving, but its only properly viewed from one angle. To do one that would look right, each individual letter would have to be modeled on its own, placed, angled, embed, and removed from the main body to create equal depth and angled lettering. I might work on it to put 'schmots' in star wars letters on a small section of my hilts, but at least with my software, its way to difficult to do often.

You should take orders soon. I am sure a few of us would love to have one of these, just for the unique factor.

As neat as it would be to know that someone had a hilt I designed, I am pretty sure SF would frown on that.

Again I won't release these printable files without SFs ok, but a jpeg render of the first four pummels of the ASP should be ok. If they don't mind I would release all the basic 1-10 sets for easy side by side comparisons for people thinking about ASP.

Awsome stuff.
I would take care with anything above "look what i made" type posts. I'd love to see more as you make them just don't want you to accedently cross the blurry line someway and get nixed for it.

Having originally gone to college for 3d modeling and animation I can comisserate with the dificulty of doing sunken text into an object. Its a lot more detail than it looks and is probably easier to stencil and out of the finished product with an engraver.

That'd actually probably feel more personal with what I had in mind.

I come from a film and editing background, and one of my biggest pet peeves is when someone says, "That's easy, computers do all the work for them" or something similar when talking about movies, animation, video games, 3D modeling, etc. Sometimes it comes from a place of ignorance, but more often than not its meant condescendingly, and belittles all the hard work that goes into stuff like this. /rant

That would be a cool idea; people could print out a mockup of the saber they designed to see if they like it, or people with sabers could print a part they were thinking about ordering and see how it would fit with the hilt you they have.

the last idea really wouldn't work. I wouldn't have the threading information they have.

Once ASP is online....

1: Parter with SF to offer printing service to allow people to test ASP parts
2: People try ASP parts before buying, more ASP sold
3: ????
4: PROFIT!!!

Lol in a perfect world :P

I guess I meant more along the lines of just holding it up to the hilt.

Actually, the perfect world would be SF selling STL files of the ASP parts. Some wouldn't print right, but for the others they could print them and test. They will never be as good as the metal milled ones so it shouldn't affect normal sales and could bring in revenue at a lower price point that wouldn't require human interaction.

Designed them without threads, slip fittings much like PVC pipe. If it's a mock-up why does it need to be threaded when you can just rotate it into position.

My son with his 3d printed saber. No paint on this one, I just used grey and black filaments.

All right. You can kinda watch it unfold.

All parts printed.

All parts painted.

And the reveal. Ahsoka Tano's lightsaber

I didn't model this one. I downloaded it for thingiverse. I just printed and painted it.

Appreciate you saying so.

I'm currently designing this saber to fit around a simple bic stik pen. The pummel will be the cap.

I am working on the lightsaber pen, its a bit too fat right now, however I will do a separate thread for those. This is a little peak at what I am also working on for me.

Seeing it, I wanted it, the fact that it isn't made wasn't acceptable. This is what I am working on for me right now. Not my original idea (obviously) but this is my modeling work. This is just a render.
