Need some help, guys. Our County 4-H groups are doing a Family Learning Day this April (if you don't know what that is, basically it's a one-day 4-H convention where people put together 45 minute lessons on a certain topic). I've been learning some Form I recently, getting the hang of it really quickly, and it's a ton of fun. As such, I really want to do a lightsaber training class based around Form I. Do you guys think that would be a good idea? If so, I need a bit of advice on how to put it together. For lesson points so far, I have:

Five minutes or so on history and lightsaber aesthetics and properties
Positions, zones and movement
Basic strikes and parries
Accelerations and combos
MAYBE simple spinning and orbits

I will almost definitely have a partner/apprentice if I can teach him. I need help with things like what to add, what to remove, ideas on class size (average high school classroom, so however many lightsaber toting kids and adults I can fit into such a space), ex cetera. Help is greatly appreciated!

Hi Eddlyss64,

Just a thought here but do you have first-aid knowledge or someone who has that could help, I wouldn't want any serious accidents and no cover! Accidents can happen and even non-lethal Lightsabers have their dangers! I can attest to getting my orbits wrong and Ouch.
Also safety related, maybe have a couple of pairs of gloves at least and possibly eyewear protection for the really young/inexperienced students.

Kind regards

For Tyeth

Maybe some students could bring their own gloves etc if they have any kit.

Well, unlike my friend that I mentioned, I forgot about the $2 we were supposed to bring in to get our certifications for first aid from our first aid unit in 8th grade. So I'm not technically certified, by my friend is. Safety glasses should be no problem, and we likely won't need gloves since I currently don't foresee too much sparring.

Got any idea how many people we should allow. I figure probably 12 sabers, because we can probably fit a dozen saber wielding newbs into one classroom, so should we shut our doors after we have twelve people? It's kind of a walk in thing, where people kind of show up after their last 'class'.

Hi again,

That's always good to have a "medic". I learnt this from studying Performing Arts and Theatrical Productions.
Basic common sense. I would say around a dozen students would be manageable between you and your Padawan. However you say folks may come and go but having 12 "Active" at a time is probably enough, they can always substitute in or out!

Kind regards

Well, I don't think anyone was gonna ask about a follow up, but here goes.

Unfortunately, the project fell through. Me and my friend got our plans made for this deal with the intention of using one of our school's gyms. Well, as it turns out this deal pnly used our school for the FLD in FEBRUARY. The one in April that we'd planned for was based in a tech school without a gym. Oh, and couple on the fact that we lost track of time before the sign-up deadline. Long story short, this was a fail. However, we are ready for next year!
