Is it possible to have a string blade module installed in a SF hilt with quick connects? Something that would allow using a regular LED module for stunts/dueling, but the ability to swap in a string blade for display/showcasing? I'm really interested in having a saber that can have "extending" ignition effect rather than just blinking on.

I know the tech exists, because Hampton's Handcrafted Lightsabers is doing something similar with the modular system he's doing (this is the year of the modular sabers it seems).

That's promising to hear. I've actually had trouble finding sabers that use this effect.

Ah, is this why the old FX lightsabers had permanently attached blades?

Yeah his main thing are string blades that are duel worthy (or so he says, I've never seen one in action). He makes excellent crystal chambers, but his hilts are just so darn thick (they're like those C-cell Maglites). Though his modular line is supposed to be compatible with MHS parts (and has Tim from TCSS's blessing, unlike US).

His YouTube page has posted some useful DIY videos on powdercoating and rubberizing hilt parts.

When Master Replicas made them through 2005, yes. Though after Hasbro bought them they came out with the removable ones (as well as the fixed blade ones of lesser quality).

Yeah, I haven't been a fan of his hilts, myself. Design wise, there are relatively non-SF hilts that appeal to me (and with ASP, heh, forget about it XD). But if there's a way to rig up a string blade to produce that FX sabers effect and still be detachable, I'm keen to find it. Actually, that gives me a fun idea for a speculation thread...

From what I've seen of HHCL's string blades (which are removable), as well as the removable blade FX sabers, the blade plugs in a similar way to those tubular ceiling lights in schools and offices. So I could see the port for the string blade being on a quick connect, and then be swapped out for a LED unit.

You'd just have to make sure your in hilt LED and and string blade LEDs have similar power requirements.

You could make a quick-connect string blade, yeah, but it wouldn't have the extension/retraction effect. You'd need about 5 extra wires and a board setup to handle extension/retraction. It's possible to make really bright, really even blades this way, though, so long as you didn't intend to duel with them.

On the flip side, you could go the other way around - sort of a reverse-FX conversion. Start with a board that supports string blade extension/retraction, wire it with a 7-pin quick-connect, and a removable string blade. You could then wire an LED module to use that same 7-pin quick-connect to swap into the hilt when the string blade's out - so long as the board supported the LED current.

I really think string blades are the future of this craft. Just so many things can be done, and all the innovation on durability. In 5 years those will be the top of the line. Thought I still am expecting someone to make a pop in and out chassis that can fit all our led in the hilt style companies. I think SF, US and VV might have to come together, " to degree" in an effort to stop this. It's just to logical to have the 12 watt quick connect leds and " have many different colors to pop on" then focus on a really good sound board, basically all top of the line at first. Built into one unit, you just pop and do a 3min install on another saber and be able to ignore the makers. Can't imagine there wont be law suits all over if someone sells these in mass
