I am new to these 18650 batteries.
I've seen them 900mah to 3400mah; from protected to unprotected, 14.99 to 34.99.

My question is: What is the best battery for our sabers that will be using 12+ LEDs with sound, and is a higher capacity better?

It's really not such an issue with mAh as it is an issue with output current - even with a high capacity, cheap batteries won't be able to put out the 4A for single-blades and 8A for crossguards that the Saber Forge LEDs need.

The Saber Forge store carries 8-10A 18650s with a 3400mAh capacity. Those should work fine.

If you're wanting to buy in bulk, I found this recommendation from the Igniter manual:

Another good choice is the KeepPower with the 3 module protection circuit, as that battery can withstand high drain. These are usually on Ebay; just search for “KeepPower 18650 3400mAh” and pick ones that have the good protection circuit.

If you're willing to re-wire your saber, a 26650 might *juuuust* be able to squeeze into the hilt for an even longer run time.

Thanks for the info. I currently have 2 18650. one 2500mah and one 3400mah. When fully charged they put out 4v and after about an hours use 3.7v at 8A,
Would these ones work?

The Amazon description states they're larger than standard 18650s, so they might not fit in the SF battery holder. It also mentions a 10A protection circuit, so if you were soldering your own battery pack, they would work fine.

Would an unprotected 18650 be dangerous to use?

Dangerous for the battery. Saber could continue draining the battery past the typical 2.5v cutoff, damaging the battery.

Also, a bad charger might charge the battery up past 4.2v, which could burn out the saber LEDs.

I mean, if you were being really careful to always charge the battery when the saber got a little dim and used a proper charger with a 4.2v cutoff, it *could* work, but I'd never, ever, recommend it.
