Anyone have any experience using a Link: Crystal Focus Saber Core board in a SF saber? I've got a Jade Fire I'd like to consider putting one in.

Will it fit? ( 53x23.5x7.5 mm )

Will the 7.5 drive the SF 12W LEDs?

This is from their manual-- so I'm hoping yes?

"The Plecter Labs high-power LED driver embedded on the Crystal Focus Board can
now drive up to 3A and works with any high power LED featuring a forward voltage
(Vf) lower or equal to 10V. Luxeon, Rebel, Seoul, Prolight, Cree and Ledengin branded
LEDs have been tested successfully. Please note that as we’re writing this manual, we
cannot guarantee the use with ANY kind of high-power LEDs appearing in the market
in the future."

Your best bet with that would be to write them an email about it, just to be sure before trying anything! But as you say, it might work!

Right in the manual you quoted, it said it has a maximum Vf of 10v, but it does support Cree LEDs, so I assume a 12V won't work, but a 6v would. Or if you could find an older 10V Cree LED.

SF LEDs are pre wired in parallel and meant to run off of 3.7V batteries so the 10V limit on the CF shouldn't be an issue... of course, it might be dim since CF only pushes 3A and SF LEDs are meant to run off 3.4A batteries.

I think it could be done if you ran two 18650 3.7V in series and then run the LEDs serial and parallel.

Or you could use a tri cree or tri rebel. Make your day a lot easier.

Thanks to everyone for your replies. I haven't taken apart the SF saber yet (not sure I want to void my warranty :-) MystByte, my understanding is that the LEDs in the SF sabers are 12W not 12V. At 3.7V, that would mean about 3.2amps if my math is right--which is a little hot for the CF board. But it's unclear to me if there's just one LED or several in the SF saber? Is the 12W a rating for each LED or total wattage from several LEDs?

Miraluka, I think the battery ratings are amp-hours, meaning how long the batteries can provide a specified amperage.

4 dice in SF modules. Each is a 3W Cree XB-D

And yeah, you're right, the 12W unit should (in thoery) run in that 3-3.3ish Amp area so it would probably still be better to run a Tri. I honestly don't think the 4th LED makes a huge difference in brightness, but it does allow for even color mixing, though.

Just out of curiosity, were you asking about SF LEDs because they have a color mix you like or was it just cause it's already installed in your hilt? Or because of brightness?

Thanks for that info, that's extremely helpful. It looks like maybe if I grabbed the optional "Color Extender" I could drive all 4.

I'm mostly asking about these just because they are what we have in the hilt now. I'm pretty new to this whole thing. My wife's been very excited since she got her first saber. I like to dink around with electronics--and the saber we got didn't come with any sound board etc.. Originally I was thinking about trying to wire up a micro-controller, soundboard, and motion sensor, but have now discovered the wide world of saber control boards and decided others have already made better boards than I'm likely to. This seems to be the best board I can find so far. So now I'm trying to figure out if we could mod her existing saber to use it.

The brightness on her SF saber is pretty amazing to me (don't know how it compares to others) and she likes the color--so if I do mod it, I'm hoping to preserve some of these characteristics. Although, I'm also really interested in the idea of doing color mixing.

Are there any other LEDs you'd recommend? Particularly for color mixing? Erv, who makes the board, seems to like the Luxeons.

Well, if you want to use the CF you could just get a tri rebel (luxeon) or tri cree RGB. You may be able to get a tri Cree from their website, but for right now, you can get a Rebel tri RGB from the custom saber shop. I think they're in the process of phasing out Rebel and moving to Cree.

SaberForge LEDs are very bright and once they get their new optic lens in, they'll look even better. That being said, don't underestimate the brightness of single 3W LEDs. =]

If you do decide to run 4 dice, I think SaberForge will sell you an RBGA. It'll offer a little more advanced color mixing with the Amber LED in there, but most people are happy with RGB.

I, personally, am not into color changing sabers. I'd rather just put the color I want in there and be done with it. I may do a color changer some time down the road just for fun.

I agree with you but the Champion edition one color 12W does not have the ability to change font.

Sorry to revise an old topic but does anyone know if you can use the crystal focus 7.5 with a 12w led for just one single color not ment to mix like just using it for 12w purple and not have foc to switch to another color?

You could use the 12W module but just like with SF sabers, the LEDs wouldn't actually be driven that high. The CFv7.5 has a 3A 10Vf limit so you could drive a tri rebel or tri CREE in parallel nicely.

I would use a tri but that's just me.
