Hey folks,

Been lurking for a while, finally decided to have a go at making a saber for a costume I'm putting together and could use some help from people more knowledgeable than I!

I'm going to attempt to build a replica(ish) of the lightsaber Kylo Ren uses in the latest Star Wars movie.

I'm not going to worry about sound to begin with, just LEDs for the 3 blades and necessary pieces to make them work.

I feel like I have a (very) basic understanding of what I'd need to get something working for a single blade, however I'm not confident that I would build a 3-blade system the best / correct way.

I'm thinking that I'll use a 12w LED module from saberforge for the main blade. For the two sides I'll likely go for something different as they won't need to be as bright and will be slightly smaller in diameter. What I'll use instead I don't quite know... suggestions are welcome.

I don't yet know whether I will go for a single switch for all 3 blades or two switches (one for main and one for side) to try and imitate the delayed / two stage 'ignition' seen in the movie. If one is easier / better / safer than the other I'm happy to go for that.

So yeah, hoping folks on here will be able to offer some advice, suggestions, diagrams, anything to help me get a better idea of what I'll need to make this happen.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

Hey, finlex.
Firstly, you sound pretty clued up about this sort of engineering, and obviously confident enough in your abilities to have a go at it. Do you work with electrical installations or similar?

Perhaps someone like-minded might be able to PM you to discuss, but as I think has been touched on recently, not sure how far the members here are permitted to go in terms of openly talking about inner workings and so on.
Not that I could even if I tried!!

Can anyone offer anything else on this?

I wouldn't say I know too much about it. I've done a little work with wiring and soldering circuits and such for small projects in the past, but only ever as a hobby. Enough to (hopefully) understand the basic elements required and understand any advice that might hopefully be offered!

I wasn't aware that members weren't able to discuss the specifics of inner workings, so apologies if this thread is inappropriate. I figured that it would be OK in a group described as "asking for advice, or giving advice, about how to build or modify saber electronics."

I'd appreciate help here or via PM, whichever is acceptable :)

Guaranteed, there will be plenty of great folks on here who have interest and expertise in this area.
You'll get loads of advice to pick and choose from. As for the whole rules thing, I'm not entirely clear on it myself yet. :silly:
Just being safe rather than angering a big red  mod!
