Hi,

Finally got my saber today and am about 80% happy with it! Overall, great saber.

Unfortunately, I'm having a big issue, and a couple minor ones.

First, the minor one. I got the saber level with just the light, no sound. There was an included button cover, but there is no way to secure it to the hilt (wtf? couldn't make it threaded like the actual switch?). Like I said, minor. I can always tape it on the inside.

Next, the saber plug. When I ordered, I didn't see an option to notate that I needed the thin neck model, but seeing as the saber is a thin neck....so, I'll have to cut that down to actually be able to fit. Again, not a deal breaker, but still.

Also, there is no way in hell that I can unscrew the pommel. Not sure what was done, but that is the only piece that ISN'T able to come off, and I was hoping it would so I wouldn't twist my cables.

And now, the major issue that almost makes the saber unusable.

There is not stoppage to the thin neck emitter and the "grenade" section, so 1) it is either really really freaking loose, or 2) it threads all the way into that part and then bounces around. I will probably end up using plumber's tape for it, but very frustrated that this wasn't caught before it was shipped out. Even with the LED secured as much as I can get it, it is still loose. Even worse with the blade in.

Has anyone else with the thin necks had any issues like this?

Thanks in advance. Saber parts below:

Emitter: Redeemer 3, standard
Switch Section: Switch #5, standard
Body: Fury, standard
Pommel: Gladius, standard
Blade Plug: Apprentice, silver
Blade: 32 inch
LED Module: Amber

I know when they assemble thin-neck sabers at their factory, they use some kind of adhesive to lock the emitter into the hilt body, and a "C" ring to secure the LED module in place. Since the ASP program entails self-assembly, I am not sure what the intentions are with regards to these things, but it would surely be worth asking. I would contact Customer Service to ask about those specific things.

This sounds like an awesome looking saber, and with some finishing steps, it should also be an awesome dueling saber as well.

Bum. That's the emitter I've got coming too. I'll keep an eye on this thread in case you get any working fixes.

Good luck!

Redeemer Emitter 3, do you say? Does it actually have the Exalted-style silver-lined grenade grip, or is it all black?
And I do hope SF can make everything right for you, I'm just curious.

:( I hope this isn't a consistent problem. One of the hilt's I'm most looking forward to owning uses a thin neck.

I think the issues most recently reported with sabers assembled by SF had to do with the type of adhesive used. I heard from a pretty reliable source that due to the trend of reported issues, that they switched the type of adhesive used to something they thought would be more consistently reliable. So, that aspect of the problem should begin to subside.

However, with the ASP sabers, since they are user assembled, I am not sure how this is being handled, which is why I encouraged the OP to contact customer service with that question. Hopefully, we will have clarification soon.

Haven't had a chance to email them yet, but will be doing that soon.

Also, not sure if it is me and my expectations, but does the blade seem a little dim?

Thin necks are going to be slightly dimmer than regular emitters, as the light has to travel from all the way down in the body through the narrow tube to the blade in the emitter. There is a reflective strip they coat the inside of the neck with to help with this, but some of the light is still lost.

That being said, time for the standard tech support question: have you given the battery a full charge yet?

This is good info. I wonder if the initiate tier hilts come with that same reflective material in the necks or if it is something that needs to be done if you are building your own?

Also, I can confirm my saber got significantly brighter as I charged it per what Jaden Korr is asking. If it's not fully charged, it's worth a try.

I think the reflective material will already be in there. They don't ship initiate sabers out without switch holes, so I wouldn't think they'd skip out on that either.

And based on the saber picture you provided GreyJedi, I assume you have an ASP hilt.

There wouldn't be a thin neck blade plug option, as thin neck sabers don't come with them normally; the Prodigal Son doesn't as it's based on Luke's ROTJ hilt, and a plug would mess up the look, and the Exaulted/Redeemer emitters don't because the center tube gets in the way of one getting flush.

That being said, forum member NeBosa has made several great thin neck blade plug mods, and in this thread he explains how he cut the polycarbonate tube (what's used for blades and blade plugs) to fit in his Redeemer: https://saberforgeforum.com/forum/saber-forge-saber-gallery/6195-i-created-another-blade-plug-mod-but-this-time-for-a-thin-neck?limitstart=0

As for the switch cover, those are usually glued in using something like Locktite (permanent but can be released with heat), though some people have used e6000 (permanent but remains somewhat tacky).

Tiny bit sad it's not an all black grenade :D Still looks pretty cool though.

Was the blade film pre cut for a thin neck emitter?

Is that Yellow or Amber LED? In my opinion, these two colors appear less bright compared with say standard green, all the blues, Red or even Blood Orange and white. But please let me make it clear, I am not saying Yellow and Amber are not bright per se, but when compared/ranked in order of brightness with the aforementioned, these two colors appear less bright. On their own, Yellow and Amber are pretty bright and are excellent colors to have nonetheless. The thin neck design roughly speaking takes about 10% to 20% off brightness compared with an open/non-thin neck emitter. This is just based on observation by the humble eye, nothing measured by electronic measurements. :P

Thanks for all the tips. I was finally able to get the pommel off (yay, no more twisting wires). And yes, I was using a full charged battery (I already have 2 18650 4000mAh batteries for my flashlight).

I guess I was expecting a little more brightness because of DarthMario95's video showing the durability and these supposed to be sporting the brighter LEDs. I'm still very happy with my saber.

I built mine close to the Exalted so I could upgrade it. They released the vigilant after I ordered, so looks like that will he next!

Again, thanks for all the tips. I will update when I find out more regarding the emitter.

As others have said, Amber/Yellow/Orange will inherently be dimmer than blues and greens due to thickness of the color wavelength. It still looks good to me tho! :D

I was concerned as I was getting a thin neck saber as well. I also had the same problem with the neck being a little loose but plumbers tape really helped keep it secure. Honestly in the end I am very happy with this great saber.
