Hmmm, I can't speak directly on this particular matter, since I don't own any hero sabers and don't know all about the changes that have happened between last year's hero sabers and the newer hero soundboard, but I can share my experiences with my old champion Fury in 5W white neutrino soundboard which I bought last year, and a new champion Exhalted 12W amber viridian soundboard which I recently acquired.
I bought the staff extension to connect the two, and it actually looks and sounds quite nice. Granted, the new viridian soundboard is identical to the old neutrino soundboard, just with the addition of blaster bold deflection auxiliary sounds, and its ability to power a 12W LED.
Lighting-wise, the new 12W far outclasses my old 5W, which itself has been replaced with a 6W. I put a couple color discs in my white 5W saber to "match" the amber color of my 12W, just to give the appearance of a double bladed saber with similar color blades, and while it's clear in person that the 12W is vastly superior and brighter, it isn't half bad. You can judge for yourself on this video I made along with some pictures:

Is the old Hero soundboard customizable? I know with the new Hero board you can have up to 5 different sound fonts saved onto the microSD card, so I think it's certainly possible for you to find at least one sound font that either matches or complements the existing sound fonts on your old Hero.
I hope these thoughts have been helpful to you!
The Hero level from earlier this year has a Dual Phase soundboard which only comes with a single sound system but very customizable via the micro SD card. And it comes with two 6W LEDs which on my case both are reds.
From what I've seen of the new system, it is a new soundboard with 5 different sounds that already come included, and the light system works by having two 6W LEDs with your colors, and a third 12W that mix both colors together, and you CHANGE the colors by twisting your wrist quickly with the saber in hand, instead of clicking the extra button, so you can have it set with one of the 6W colors, or the 12W with a mix of both colors ( which in my case it doesn't matter since both are reds )
And from what you showed me, the difference visually exists but its VERY minimal, so I think my worries are going away! Also, thank you for showing how the connector works too ( Although mine is different with holes instead of slits ) It seems to hold really well under fighting and stress and not uncscrew, and that is good to know and see for sure!
Thank you very much for the helpful tips and explanation, it definitely helped out!
