Hi all, i'm waiting for my grey weathered gladius with brown reptile wrap and i m thinking about darken it a little if i find it too light... ( it's not supposed to be a sith/dark jedi saber so i have'nt chose black reptile wich is reaaaaally cool looking... ).

Do you guys know how to do it and give it a "relic" look like it was unburied from the ruins of an old republic temple or arena ? ;)

AND if someone have a picture of a grey weathered 2015 new gladius PLEASE show me !! ;)

Thank you

Some mink oil will darken brown leather up nicely, and soften it a bit too. The more you use, the darker it gets. Just go slowly, and you should be able to dial it in to the exact tone you're looking for. I just did the same to match a pair of leather boots and belt that were a couple shades off from each other.

I think the etsy page has the 2015 weathered gladius pictured.

Thank you for your nice advice! Do you think it's possible to have the reptile pattern darker than the surface with this kind of oil you mentionned ?

Maybe i can go with a way to weather the leather but i dont want to screw up with this beauty

And for the etsy page and all the internet i only found the black weathered, not gray wich is quite differrent and give a less dark-sith looking . ( i m thinking about my character as a freelance jedi who discovered his first saber scavanging ruins ... he is not supposed to be in the dark side ....YET ?! )

Not sure if it is any help but I have on order two sabers with wraps that match the LED color: Cobalt Stingray matching Deep Blue, and Dark Red matching Red. These are already dyed colors so I wouldn't want to mix/weather it myself.

I agree with Crumb. Mink oil is probably your best bet to get the look you want in a dark brown but a little bit goes a long ways.

You could also soak it in a dye wash (a small amount of brown or black model paint or food coloring in pretty much an oil... again a very small amount of oil) and just work it in like a baseball glove. Most water based coloring agents will probably damage the wrap.

Alternatively you could undo the wrap and completely re-dye it but that's a lot of work and if you aren't careful could really stretch out or damage the wrap.
