Recent times have seen interest in Star Wars greatly rekindled and LED saber technology advance in big ways. Right now we're all hotly anticipating modular hilts with drop in electronics, but that's just the next step forward. What comes after?

What do you think will/want to be the next big revolution in LED sabers?

Turgon-style black core blades seeing mass production might be a big thing.
Whatever comes next, it's gonna be exciting. We've got so much more interest now, and thus more people working on things. This will be fun.
The above post may be subject to editing. A lot of editing.

Honestly I think it would have to do with longer lasting and/or smaller batteries, especially now that crossguard sabers are here (which need to power 3 different LEDs), though this is not limited to the saber industry, but technology as a whole.

Additionally, maybe better availability of higher end boards. I remember Erv Plector (of Plector Labs, maker of the Pico Crumble, Nano Biscotti, Crystal Shard, and Crystal Focus boards) saying that he was having a hard time finding large scale electronic manufactures in France that would produce boards in the order size he needed (they considered it too small), but maybe with the higher demand for sabers, maybe he'd be able to order a large enough number of them to partner with one.

Currently, it seems like it is just his shop and an affiliate in the states (for TCSS) that produce his boards, and he doesn't want to outsource to other countries because he wouldn't be able to do the quality checks he'd want (which I respect).

I'd personally love to see scrolling blade capabilities with in hilt LEDs. I saw something from www.wickedlasers.com that used a magnetic mirror that slid up and down along the blade when powered up/down to simulate this effect pretty well, but I think they ran into issues selling their product in the US due to legal issues of such powerful portable lasers.

I recently heard samsung had some revolutionary stuff for smaller lithium ion batteries for cell phones that will likely trickle down to other electronics at some point. I think the phones with these are slated for 2017.

And for good reason. Check out this laser "shotgun" this guy made using a bunch of 5w lasers:

The same guy also made a "laser sword" that will probably be the closest thing we'll ever get to a real lightsaber using a 7w laser:

Though the tech you described sounds really cool.

Scrolling blade like the FX sabers? Considering how tough string blades have become, I can definitely see that happening.

New battery development would be a huge boon to the industry, too.

I'd be really excited to see sturdy, duel capable quick release couplers.

I imagine the 3D printing world also has a lot to offer the saber industry.

Personally I'd like to see Bluetooth compatibility so that soundboard and led settings could be adjusted with a smartphone app.

I've actually come across a couple of crowdfunding projects recently trying to bring something like that to the market.

I've said this one before and I'll say it again, even though it has more to do with general saber revolution than just saber industry.

I can foresee a world where the common man traverses the streets with a lightsaber clipped to his belt. Though guns are still a thing, a public dispute with someone would be dealt with in a public duel between the two people. Problems would be solved by skill with a saber rather than how much money you pay your lawyer. It would be like the days of the samurai, days of honor.

I've said my piece.

Dude YES! I carry my saber on my belt everywhere I go except for school and work. I want people to see that Lightsabers are awesome and can be used as a fashion statement...and that I also don't give a s*** what people think of me while having it, I'm a geek whatever!
Light and darkness, you cannot have one without the other. To achieve equilibriem you must be in harmony with both; the path between.

I would totally do that. If I had one, that is. I was going to order a cheap one a while ago but decided to wait.

Not just a fashion statement (though an ornate and expensive saber could signify a person of reasonable wealth or one who is a skilled duelist), but a way to solve disagreements. Have a rivalry with someone? Settle it in a public duel. Want to impress a date? Arrange a duel between you and your waiter at a restaurant. Teying to rob someone? Better hope that someone doesn't carry a Juggernaut on their belt.

Captain Ignorant asks: In this future setting, are they real functioning LightSabers emitting energy upon activation and retracting when deactivated or are polycarbonate blades carried on your person as well and on acceptance of a 'formal' challenge- a brief pause to secure the blade first?

Regards,
Captain Ignorant.

They are polycarbonate, Monsieur Ignorant. It would teach people respect to wait until their opponent has secured their blade before the duel.

While it would be interesting... I feel this would still play out in any fight/duel, real or poly.

All that sounds pretty awesome, but i would love to se advances on the blades. Whith v4 we fixed problems with impact (tip flying off, blade dreaking, scratches and marks....) but... what about some kind of blade thats easier to transport or travel with? something retractable or sectional, that actualy could resist impacts for use or dueling.
