I like the look of base flare on the saber pics. I'll give a more informed opinion when mine actually comes in. Not a lot of base flare on the older MR FX sabers that I own. I have a feeling I'll like it more when my SF sabers come in.

I like a little base flare, so long as it does not detract from brightness at the end of the blade. With the new 12w+ LEDs, that is no longer an issue.

That's great to hear Brax. I was just going to say that I thought it looked cool, but was under the impression that if you had a big base flare, it meant that the light wasn't evenly distributed along the blade. What you say about the 12w+ puts me more at ease.

By moving the individual LED dies closer to the center, the light is more evenly distributed in the blade, making for a noticeable difference when looking at their previous 12w version, and the newer 12w+. It also increased overall brightness a bit, and actually used a little less power. All the things we like in an LED!

With the LED's closer to the centre, that must help out with the brightness on the thin necks.

I have not seen any comments on that specific benefit, but it stands to reason that it would, simply because thin-necks are more dependent on a centered light source than regular sabers are. That is why I am having the 12w LED in my own thin-neck replaced with a 12w+ as soon as I can. In fact, I have already contacted the Customer Service department about it, and received instructions on how to do it. I have but to follow through, and get it done.

So as you can see, I am not just a forum mod, I am also a customer. ;) :P :side:

Brax, you're probably the best person to ask, will ASP thin necks be quick connect compatible?

Although the base flare can be a cool effect at times, it gives the light saber a little unfinished or uncontrolled power. Gives it a little bit of a Sith feel and kind of reminds me a bit of the glow around the characters in DBZ.

For a Jedi saber of balance and control, as well as movie authenticity, I would lean towards a nice clean but evenly bright blade all the way.

The base flare just reminds me of the old Marvel comics and posters. Artists always seemed to give the saber a base flare.

Disclaimer: Not Brax

Yes. The reason quick connects aren't an option on regular the necks is that you have to take the saber apart to access the LED (instead of sliding it out the emitter), not because they don't work/fit on the saber. If you get the hilt via ASP, the parts are separate anyway.

The honest answer is, I hope so, but I am not sure.

The issue preventing regular model thin-necks from being quick-connect compatible is that the emitter is threaded into the hilt, and the LED sits beneath the threaded portion of the emitter. In order to keep the emitter from coming loose, some kind of adhesive, or thread-thread lock is applied. I know this because when I got mine, the it was spread a little too thin, and the emitter began to loosen during sparring. I sent it in for a warranty repair, and they fixed it right up, and it has been good ever since.

I have seen the thin-neck emitters in ASP, and it is hard to tell from the 3-d tool if the design has changed to accommodate the easy replacement of the LED, or not. Also, of the ASP sabers that have been reviewed, I have not seen any thin-neck emitters, so there is no empirical evidence available to make a determination.

I am planning on getting a few ASP hilts over time, and I hope that I can have the freedom to switch out the LED if I so desire, but it is certainly not a show stopper for me. Having the same LED in my saber has not been that much of an issue, because I love the color. The only instance where it would have been nice to have the ability to change it was with the 12w+ upgrade, but it won't stop me from getting it done anyway.

Another thing I just thought of; I wonder if the ASP thin necks use a set screw for the LED, or use a snap ring like the regular ones?

Brax, what colour LED did you get? I plan on constructing Luke's Ep VI saber (sans control box) and I'm not sure if I should just go with standard green or lime green. I watched a YouTube video of Shameem with a lime green saber and he raved about it, saying that it was a true green and that he thought he would be choosing LG for all his green needs going forward. It looked amazing on video, but that's not what you see in person. I was worried that it would be too yellow. Have you seen Lime Green in person? Oh, and to stay on topic, I hope it has a bright green base flare hahaha.

The 3D saber configurator doesn't show a screw hole for the LED on the thin necks. I have noticed it on non thin neck emitters.

It looks kind of cool sometimes in a picture, but generally I prefer an evenly lit blade.

So are you saying standard green is the way to go? What ever looks the closest to Luke's Jedi saber is what I want.
