Almost all of the SF hilts are combat capable... some more so than others.

In my opinion the PS makes for good cosplay or display but for a beginner there are more robust and "friendly" hilts SF sells. The control box and the thin neck design aren't dueling friendly.

The Gladius, Arbiter/Sentinel, Disciple/Arbiter, Katana, and Reliant (sans control box) are some of the most versatile and durable hilts in the SF stable and I can easily endorse those hilts for the beginner.

Saberfan57, for beginners the Prodigal Son is probably not the best saber for dueling. Just echoing what h2soy said--the control box will get in the way. I have never dueled with my PS but just from spinning & stuff the control box gets in the way some times---the nice thing about it is the control box is not sharp so it won't scrape or cut your hands up.

If you want 90% of the look with better ergonomics, more robust build and handling potential, go for the Chosen! ;)
