Why oh why have they not released the original (non-CG-Lucas-ruined) trilogy on blu-ray or digitally????

There is just nothing better to get you excited your about your sabers on order!

I seem to recall hearing somewhere that Disney was going to re-release the original Trilogy in its original, pre-"CGI-the-s**t-out-of-everything" form at some point. Haven't heard anything about it since I read that though, and I read that one time maybe six months ago in an article someone had posted on Facebook. So, grain of salt and all that.

After I ordered my saber last week, the wife and I spent all last Friday evening watching the prequels (she'd never seen AotC or RotS, and only remembered about half of TPM). She said that having me there to explain some of the backstory for her made them a lot more tolerable than she was expecting. :cheer:

(And I, personally, still think RotS was pretty good, despite some of the more cringe-inducing writing, and the fact that they pretty much made Padme a glorified extra in the theatrical cut.)

From what I read about that, it was a hoax, as the "source" that leaked said information seems to have forgotten that Disney doesn't own distribution rights to the original trilogy, Fox does. They would have to come to a release deal, which I don't forsee happening, as Lucas himself was very adamant about not having the uneditted versions ever released again, as he felt the "redone" versions more closely matched his visions of what the films should have been, and feels they are now complete, whereas they weren't before. SO! That all being said, it's pretty highly unlikely that release will happen, at least any time soon, unless Fox and Disney come to an arrangement. Also, doing such a transition would be a pretty costly endeavor, as taking the original film negatives and converting them over to an HD format would still involve remastering the audio and certain visuals, so even then it still wouldn't be truly uneditted. So, VHS em up! lol

I recently bought the "original" trilogy to watch with my 5 year old son. We were both very excited. He has never seen them before. Oh how horrified I was when I realised they were the newCG ones!!! I don't know about you guys, but I thought they were ruined and I was glad my kid did not know any better. If only I never got rid of my vhs. As far as Disney releasing the untainted versions, that is still not confirmed. HAN SHOT FIRST!!!

In the uneditted trilogy, Han was the only one to shoot, lol. They added in Greedo shooting because they felt Han being the only one to shoot portrayed him as murdering in cold blood.
"Han shot first" is a phrase referring to a controversial change made to a scene in Star Wars (1977), in which Han Solo (Harrison Ford) is confronted by the bounty hunter Greedo (Paul Blake) in the Mos Eisley cantina. The change was made for the 1997 Special Edition re-release of "Star Wars", and has since been altered twice more. The phrase "Han shot first" is misleading, as Greedo does not shoot at all in the original version of the 1977 film.

The rerelease of the original theatrical versions I don't ever seeing happening sadly. It's entered the realm of the remastered great music. Where the best they can do is remaster the third or fourth rate copy they can get their hands on then modify the $&@* outa it to what sounds good for them.

You would need someone with access to the original cel reel and original audio to re-capture into digital then run it through a ton of filters and amplifiers and it still wouldn't be close. Then there is the license which I think is still fox but the ip for new releases is Disney... What a mess....

I prey my VHS will last until my kids are old enough to see the originals... Even if I do have to build a new VHS deck from parts and prey it doesn't eat them..lol..so scary..

My biggest gripe about the various remasterings/re-editings/re-releases is the removal of Old Anakin from the final scene of RotJ.

While I can understand why they put Young Anakin in, to me, Old Anakin is just more logical for that particular shot.

(Though that musical number in Jabba's Palace is pretty cringeworthy.)

Both instances of Vader yelling "Noooooooo". Just takes me right out of the scenes, because it just seems SO out of character.

While the unedited versions of the original trilogy is undoubtedly better, there are some aspects I prefer in the special editions (blasphemy! get your pitchforks ready). I think my favorite additions to the films is the replacement of the Yub Nub theme at the end of Return of the Jedi. Indeed it is a catchy and memorial song, but the newer "Victory Celebration" really hits home for me. It feels more fitting than the original Yub Nub song and you get the satisfying feeling that there is a chance for peace in the galaxy. I also prefer the inclusion of the new Wampa suit. While it does to some degree take away the suspense of the scene in ESB, the new suit looks awesome and terrifying. I for one, like SOME of the added CGI at the Mos Eisley Spaceport. The new scenes really convey the grand idea of a spaceport. But hey, this is just my opinion seeing how i never grew up watching the original trilogy first.

No doubt, there is a LOT to like about some of the changes. Most of the best ones, were the most subtle ones that just added something that 70s era effects just could not handle. Some, like the Han vs. Greedo stuff were just WHOLLY unnecessary.

They were released in their original cuts on DVD in a limited run packaged w/the Lucas post edits about 8 years ago. If you got your hands on those it's a short jump to pulling digital copies off the disk...

With George's objections no longer a concern, now the only hurdle to something like this is the aforementioned distribution rights, which are held by Fox. Now, I am sure that Disney, with their near unlimited resources could come up with a deal that would be mutually beneficial for both studios. It becomes a matter of how high a priority to do they really view this issue? They know there is demand out there, but is there enough to make it worth the while of both studios?

Some kind of grassroots campaign to let them know the interest level might do it, but so far that has yet to materialize, and until they see the opportunity to not only satisfy ravenous demand, but also make a profit on it, I don't see the prospects as being really good.

Now, if they were to buy 20th Century Fox out completely (for a lot of reasons, including this one), then it might become more plausible. That would be pretty cool, but I am still wondering how it will be seeing a Star Wars movie without the 20th Century Fox fanfare at the beginning. I mean, that diddy is like a part of the soundtrack to me!

Disney and Fox are feuding right now over the Marvel Comics movie rights (Fox has X-men and Fantastic 4... Disney wants them back) so I'd imagine any kinda deal between them would be aways off.

The problem is that, other than X-Men, Fox has proven time, and again that these comic properties belong in the hands of Marvel/Disney. I understand that they still think there is a buck to be made somehow from all of this, but I think they have lost more money than they have made in recent years, and done a disservice to some of the properties along the way. I don't know how dismal a go of it they have to make before they realize that they would make more money selling them back, than attempting more movies, but it could not happen soon enough.

I can understand their anger with Marvel/Disney, since their record with these properties has been much more consistently positive, but as a business, they should know better than to make it personal like that. Hopefully, after the utter failure of the Fantastic Four, they are a little closer to realizing it.

It's good to see people haven't mauled me alive for what I said. I'm just glad this forum is nice and friendly, unlike any other forums where any mention of the prequels or the specialized versions will result in witch hunting and pitchforks.

But guys, if you want to see the original edits, i suggest searching for the de-specialized versions on the internet. Its free, well... If you don't mind ahem*torrenting*ahem stuff.

Also, Lucas could have sold the franchise with the condition of never releasing the originals. Maybe the conversation went like this:

"You can have Star Wars under one condition." Lucas said.
"Yeah?" Disney asked.
"Never release the original versions" He answered.
"Deal!" Disney exclaimed.
"You can do this. Within you is the heart of a champion"

Ducats to dollars some far flung release anniversary in the future Disney will rerelease the originals. The mouse is all about the money (not a bad thing if we get what we want). :P

So far, I have not seen or sensed anything that Disney has done with either Marvel, or LucasFilm that could be considered a "bad" thing. I am a wee bit concerned that with all of the Star Wars based projects they have scoped out, they might be overdoing it just a tad, but I am willing to ride through it and make judgement on the other side.

I think h2soy is right about them eventually releasing these, and I hope when they do, they do it right, as in hi-res scans of negatives, clean-up of digital elements, and the like. Just with added scenes removed.
