TOPIC: Need Advice - Blade Selection

Hello! First time buyer. I found this company and web page, and now I'm totally obsessed with having a saber!

I love the look of the Disciple, and the Dissident on Etsy. The brown leather grip is just gorgeous IMO. I've seen Jordan Moll's youtube reviews of them both, along with some other reviews here on the forum and other places. But man, I'm having a hard time choosing one over the other; I love the look of the Disciple - especially the glow from the shroud slot), but it seems just a hair short (for two-handed use). I would love a saber that is a hybrid of the two...

I do have a few questions (I've sent emails, but not heard back yet):

1. In recent reviews, the Disciple seems to have a much longer pommel sticking out beyond the slanted section. I don't care for this - is the shorter one (that is shown in the web site store pics) still available?
2. Is it possible to get the Disciple with a longer leather grip section, like the Reliant or Dissident?
3. Is it possible to get the Disciple with just the emitter shroud weathered in the same fashion as the Dissident?

If I could get those three things (original pommel, longer grip, and black/weathered shroud), I would buy that Disciple in a heartbeat. (And the weathered shroud isn't a deal-breaker.)


On the other hand, the Dissident is gorgeous too! Questions:

1. Can I get the Dissident with the original (shorter version) Disciple pommel?
2. Is it possible to cut a groove into the shroud (where the dimple is) like on the Disciple?

I could have that modified Dissident and be VERY happy indeed. (And the shroud groove isn't really a deal breaker either.)


Various posts have talked about custom mods people have requested, so I know that SaberForge is willing to work with buyers, at least to some extent. But I don't know if what I'm asking is possible, and if so whether I should buy from the web site, Etsy, or ASP.

I'm thinking deep blue 12W+ 32" blade, with two tone covertech. To be honest, I'm not going to duel, or Cosplay. This is probably a shelf queen purchase, with occasional swooshing with great joy and enthusiasm.

I would love to have some answers to those questions, but I would also appreciate any thoughts or comments regarding the two designs, and any trade-offs or impressions about them.

The sort answer is "no." You can work with their custom shop (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ) to do some of the weathering mods but because the Disciple is lathed from a single aluminum component the body mods will be pretty much impossible (IMO). This sounds like a much more doable mod that the custom shop can do. Sounds good. Sounds to me like the custom shop would be your best bet. Email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with your ideas and they'll get back to you within 48 hours or so with whether or not they can do it. The website, etsy (for sure), and ASP probably wouldn't work with what you're interested in.

Kraiggers. Most of your mod can't be ordered thru etsy. The Acolyte and Disciple very similar. Longer wrapped Acolyte hilt with finished shroud would get you there.!.? The Disciple and Dissident have milled recessed grip. Long pommel standard, I'm not sure.? The Acolyte had the short pommel @1point.. Reliant is another option.!

Etsy has shorter lead times but less customisation possibilities.
The main site is somewhere in between the two.


To conclude, if you are to buy one, buy the one you are the most irresistibly drawn to. And don't try to give us that "I'm drawn to the two the same way" crap, we all know it's not true

I also made some mockups to give a better idea what I'm going for.

Disciple short pommel, Longer brown leather grip, Disciple switch and rings, weathered / black style Shroud emitter. 1st one has standard pommel, 2nd one has two tone pommel with dark interior, 3rd one has two tone pommel with dark exterior.









This last one pairs really well with The dark shroud, IMO.

I do like that third one the most.

I'd have to agree with Brax and say the third one definitely looks the best. That two tone pommel matches the emitter way better.

Well, I'm sure Justin can do some of what I'm asking. It remains to be seen how close he can get. Honestly, the disciple with a longer grip is 95% what I want. The dark shroud and pommel are nice-to-have details, but not deal-breakers. I could buy the stock Disciple and love the crap out of it.

And the Dissident is pretty awesome, too. I just prefer the short style disciple pommel, which - in theory at least - should be an easy swap. The only thing about he dissident that isn't my taste, is the way the switch section transitions to the shroud stays quite thick. I really like on the Disciple the the way the rings and slight depression articulate the transition to the shroud.

I could also get something pretty great via ASP, I just would prefer not to wait until Feb for delivery. Of course, a custom order will probably take a while anyway.

This is the dissident with the Disciple short pommel, and the resilient switch section, I think. The proportions look really good to my eye. This design with the dark pommel shroud I mocked up previously would be super.

( And being predominantly dark would be a nice complement to a predominantly aluminum Disciple. - I'm already talking my myself into getting a second blade! )

Literally just got a disciple with deep blue 12w and brown leather. i wish i had seen your modifications first, it looks great.

Ooooh. I'm jealous. You have yours in hand! How does the deep blue look? I admit, I'm not sure which blue to choose (light, medium, deep, cyan...) The color comparison pages and youtube vids just don't make it very clear. I have assumed to choose deep blue as it seems like it would be the 'most blue' blue...?

I wonder if its possible to buy the Disciple short pommel separately (stock, or customized with localized weathering) and install it oneself?

Cool idea, I'm not sure Justin can extend the length of the grip like you want. The Acolyte doesn't have a recess milled for the grip. Might be a better option.! Not sure he can extend your grip that way as much as you are showing. Can't add length on a mill..

Yeah, from what I can tell the Acolyte is the same as the Disciple, except for the grip / body. Are you suggesting that the Acolyte *can* swap out the grip - for, say, a reliant or dissident grip - whereas the Disciple can't? They look like the same overall length to my eye.

I don't dislike the look of the stock disciple grip at all. It's lovely - and I may very well get one! But it does seem that the grip is optimally sized for one hand; e.g. dual-wielding with one saber in each hand (which would be *sweet* if I wanted two of the same saber).

It doesn't look like enough grip for two hands, without one creeping up above the switch area. Nothing wrong with that, but I would just prefer a longer leather grip that could accommodate two or at least one-and-a-half hands.

I realize that the Apprentice line is made differently with less component parts than the other lines, so what I'm requesting may not be possible. But it doesn't hurt to ask, right? Maybe Justin can cut a standard disciple body at the top of the grip, thread it to mate with a longer grip, and then throw the short pommel on the bottom (if still available). It *might* be really easy... Or it might be impossible...

Apprentice hilts are solid, no joints, billet stock. He gets them milled. If you remove the grip on the Disciple there is a milled recess. There is no room or stock left to mill out to the size you want.! What I was suggesting was to wrap an Acolyte hilt since it doesn't have that milled region..!.! Since it's not a normal option for the Acolyte maybe Justin could put a larger wrap on it..!
