Anyone ever wonder how the AT-AT's got on the planet? My boy asked me that question the other day. I didn't have an answer. They don't fly so there must be a huge transport ship I guess.

  • Fear is not real. It is the product of thoughts you create. Danger is very real, but fear is a choice.

They're dropped on the planet by dropships. It's explained in the Imperial handbook which is canon.
Light and darkness, you cannot have one without the other. To achieve equilibriem you must be in harmony with both; the path between.

Now THIS is a job for Kerbal Space Program if I ever saw one! You've got an AT-AT. You need to launch it, get it to orbit, and land it, all while keeping the walker in one piece. I think I'm going to need a bigger heatshield. Maybe I could attach rockets to the side of it to fine-tune the landing and then drop them once I've landed... Thanks for the inspiration.

A different Imperial handbook? Because that one isn't canon.

I say AT-AT with the letters. I think it's because it would be hard to phonetically pronounce AT-ST, and the same pronunciation method should be used for the full family (at least in my opinion).

Growing up during the 70's and 80's I said it phonetically. When the universe was expanded I switched over to the correct pronunciation. :)

You guys got it all wrong. It's Darth Sidious using the Dark Side of the Force shifting the walkers one by one from the Death Star down onto the planet.

Snakeeyz99, your logic makes since to me, however I personally have always used the phonetic pronunciation.

I debated this a while back with a friend...which prompted a google search...finding this:

It seems Lucasfilm's official response is the phonetic. The Empire is military after all. If you have ever spoken with a service member you are likely to hear them phoneticize (is that a word? haha) acronyms regularly. So I can justify it that way in my head.

I'm not sure the soldiers, aside from the command, would call it an AT-AT at all. I'd imagine they would use another nickname someone came up with over the course of the campaign, kind of like how the Clones called the battle droids Clankers most of the time. I don't think they're even referred to as AT-ATs in the movies, since they just call them Walkers.

I'm sure the troopers either call them "walkers" or "@@s", unless they're talking to a high ranking officer, then it would be the formal/official "A-T-A-T".

As for how they got to the surface of Hoth, this is still my favorite explanation:
