Hi guys, I'm still new to the replica saber universe, so I still don't completely understand everything.
Question: Why is flash on clash so widely used? I know that one of the 3 (or 4) LEDs is designated for the flash, but doesn't that degrade from the brightness of the original blade? If you wanted the brightest blade, wouldn't you want to have flare on clash, so the blade can be as bright as possible? |

Haha thanks. I'm gonna go with flare on clash so I can have the brightest blade possible.
But why does everyone use FOC if it "dims" the blade?? That's what I don't understand. |

It doesn't always dim, just depends on what colors are active. RGBA 4 3w dies, 3 mix to make a color and sometimes a Fourth becomes active for flash color mix. So actually the answer to your question is Yes and No. A lot of factors at play. type of Led quad or trie cree, and what colors scheme you want to achieve.

Hi Vyk,
There are two ways for a lightsaber blade to react to show it has "Hit" something. The first is called "Flash on Clash" or FoC, which you seem to have heard of, this makes the Lightsaber flash a different colour when the sensor detects a clash or blade on blade contact. The second is called "Flare on Clash". This is different in that when the Lightsaber detects a "Hit" then the electronics board adjusts the intensity of the blade to produce an intense flickering effect for a fraction of a second, however it doesn't change the colour of the blade, it just adjusts the intensity of light. Flash on Clash also requires one of the dies in your LED to only turn on during a clash, and usually is a different color than the main blade (like white). While this is a cool feature and does replicate the effect seen in various Star Wars media (more so in the OT) of the burst of light created when a lightsaber strikes something (like a blaster bolt), you won't be able to have the brightest blade possible with whatever LED you are using. Flare/Shimmer on Clash is preferred by people who either want the brightest or best mixed blade color possible with their LED, and/or believe that the burst of light isn't created by the saber but by what is striking it. |
