Kouri has the answer. It's too beautiful to describe. I first saw it here.

Long story short, the LEDs SF uses in their 12W+ aren't produced in a Deep Red variant, but it's entirely possible to custom build a Tri-Star in Cree Photo Red or Luxeon Deep Red.

I could look into building some quick-disconnect 1" Deep Red LED units if it's something you guys really want. Just need to find the same plugs SF uses.

Ah, probably not. The Spark Color board in Hero sabers can be configured to run anywhere from 1-4 different LED colors at a time, so the LEDs are probably custom-wired for the task. It's not impossible to change the LED, but you'd need to know your way around electronics or send your hilt to someone that does.

That said, while I'm a big fan of Deep/Photo Red, one of the other big saber builders swears that regular Red does a better job of color mixing than Deep Red, so folks wanting an RGB LED would probably still be better off with the standard Red/Green/RoyalBlue.

But if what you're after is a bright, deep, non-orange Red, then yeah, Cree Photo Red is definitely the way to go.

Can the standard Crimson Sabercore board run the Cree Photo Red led? Would I be able to literally cut the wires and remove the 12w+ and solder in the Photo Red?

Considering the Champion sabers have the option for Quick Connects and the choice of 6W or 12W LED, I assume the Sabercore boards aren't picky at all. As long as the Photo Red LED was properly resisted for the lithium-ion battery, I'm confident that the 12W+ could be cut out and replaced with a Tri-Cree.

I know someone who had the red LED on his Juggernaut switched to a Tri-Cree deep red. It is an AMAZING color! Sometimes, the classic red can look a little bit orange-ish on pictures and in person as well. That is definitely not a problem with the Deep Red LED. I wish I could show you guys the picture, but it was on the Sabermasters forum and well...

Kouri posted a pic of his MR Vader with the Tri-Cree photo (deep) red installed a few weeks ago.

Totally going to have to install a couple of these in my Mauler eventually.

On another note, my Sidious was received by SCSS today and I told him I wanted the Cree Photo Red in it

The deep red cree die is awesome (and what I'd want if I get a Sith saber), but I case you didn't read Kouri's longer explanation OvrcHAst linked to, be aware they won't be as bright as the newer regular red cree dies.

SF uses Deans micro plugs, with the connection like this (as opposed to a regular male to female connection):

I've found them for a little over a buck for the pair on Amazon, and sometimes much larger quantities on there and eBay.

If you are referring to Hake Felflame's Juggernaut, he posted it here too, so no worries:

Yeah, I've got a Tri-Red I'm wiring up in a scratch-build Kylo saber to match his fiery blade, but I *really* like the Photo Red as a typical Sith-red saber.

Full disclosure, you wind up sacrificing a bit of brightness in opting for Deep/Photo Red. Sort of how Royal Blues aren't as bright as Blues because the Royals are losing some spectrum to UV light, Deep/Photo Red lose a bit of light to IR. The LEDs aren't dim by any means, just not as bright as a standard Red (but my one-up Photo Red driven off an MR board is still enough to light up a room).

Also, on the topic of custom reds, if brightness is king, Cree and Rebel also make Red-Orange LEDs that're brighter still. I've not handled one in person, but I'd guess the color sits somewhere in between SF Red and SF Blood Orange.

--

Korr, thanks for the plug reference. I'll still need to order/borrow a QC SF hilt to see which way the plugs are wired so that I don't accidentally reverse polarity on the LED unit.

Also, before anyone asks, that pink-look to the above saber blade's a trick of the camera - similar to how Deep Blue sabers look purple on-camera. The camera sensors pick up the InfraRed of Deep/Photo Red and the UV of Royal/Dental Blue and renders them both as Magenta, which makes reds look pink and blues look purple. In person, Deep/Photo Red is unmistakably red, and it'll make any other Red LED look orange in comparison.

EDIT: Or if someone could just post a pic of one of their Quick-Connect LED units so I could see the wire orientation, that'd be nifty. I'm trying to hunt down reviews online, and so far it's looking like red wire goes on the long pin.

Just to show a side-by-side comparison, here's a picture I took a while back. On the left is my Dark Lord Relic running a tri-rebel DR/DR blade (white FoC), next to my Saberz Dark oracle set to full power on the red die of the RGB tri-rebel installed in it.

The difference is unmistakable, and I absolutely love the deep reds. I willingly sacrifice a little brightness to keep that red color to the eyes. Here's a nice selfie shot of that Dark Lord Relic using a Saberz Starlight blade. Just look at that red glow.

Thanks for the comparison! Deep red will definitely be my choice for a normal dark side saber, but for a crossguard I'm leaning toward a regular red for a more fiery look, or even the red-orange Kouri mentioned.
