Hello folks, I've been researching about TSA regulations since I'm going to have a relative of mine bring my saber from the US to me, in Turkey.

It is written in TSA's website that toy lightsabers are allowed on board as carry ons.

But since it says "toy" I thought it could mean only plastic sabers, like hasbro ultimate fx. So I contacted TSA through their AskTSA page on facebook. I gave details about how saberforge sabers have batteries and LED lights installed, and that how they are made of aliminium.

This is how they replied. So I guess we shouldnt face many issues in airports.

Update: I think tsa csr went through their policies and came up with another reply

Despite that reply I would still recommend putting it in your checked luggage. I think you could end up hassled or worse them not letting you bring it on the plane. It's easy for someone to say it's a toy not holding it and feeling the weight. I'd doubly recommend this if your saber has an emitter with points like venom, black lotus, or juggernaut.

If it were pre 9/11 I'd say no problem, but now a days they don't let you bring bottled water onto the plane. Putting stuff in your checked bag is usually much easier.

I've brought a saber with me on a plane as recently as 2 weeks ago with no problem, both to and from my destination (Tucson to LAX). I only had the hilt though as the blade would not fit in any of my carry-ons. I assume the blade would be no problem though if you had a bag of suitable size to hold it.

Though as mentioned above, it could depend on the saber design. Mine (the Ares) does not have any pointy or sharp spots such as you see on some emitters or other parts of the saber.

Thanks for suggestions, I might tell my relative to put the hilt and the blade in his checked luggage indeed.

Huh, every time I fly they ask if I'm carrying any lithium-ion batteries. I've never had any, but I guess the one stored inside the saber hilt must be passable.

...

Hah, now I'm imagining the TSA agent assuming the saber hilt's a big vaporizer.

From what I know, which I will point out is NOT in anyway personal experience, it has to be taken in carry on luggage, as li-ion batteries are not allowed in the cargo hold if over a certain amount of charge (I think at one point I heard 20%)

Heh. Vapes man, for suuuuuuure. Tooootally. lol

In all realism, they're oversized flashlights. Some with sound effects. The only real issues would be if you try to "open carry" or if it looks especailly threatening/weapon-like (i.e. juggernaught)

This is getting complicated lol, would it be better if I took the saber in carry on in the package saberforge sends it and wrapped, so its not "open carry" (this is the way I'm gonna do it anyways tho)

You will be totally fine taking it on in your carry on, as far as i know. Dont need to keep it wrapped up. Obviously it will show on the scanners, but you just need to explain its a replica lightsaber and you'll be fine. Some airlines may stop you putting it in your checked luggage, and besides, if they lose the bags you lose the saber, so I'd keep it with you. In addition, I think some airlines won't let it go in the hold as I said, due to restrictions on Li-Ion batteries, but carry on is still fine.

They're gonna x-ray it. You're almost certainly gonna be questioned. But I highly doubt you'll have any trouble past saying "its a replica saber" and them saying either "on you go" or "wow, thats so cool!"

The battery restriction only applies to spare batteries. If they are in a device they are not restricted to carry on only. Sources:

Even then I've never had an airline ask about or check my checked bags for batteries (or anything other than weight for that matter).

My suggestion to pack in checked bag focuses around two things:
1. Some models have sharp or sharp appearing parts that could be seen as a weapon and would not be allowed on a plane.
2. Even if it's technically allowed, they are such an unusual thing to the general public that I would be surprised if they didn't stop you and ask/hassle you about it. They would probably still let you on with it, but I personally try and avoid hassles at all cost, especially at the airport lol.

Check out the Thread Travelling with a Saberforge Lightsaber, an Oldie, but the content discussed is similar.

Hey guys I've been busy lately and i couldnt reply you all. My relative came to İstanbul yesterday and he said TSA people at the airport did not ask anything about the saber and let him take it on board as carry on. He'll ship it to me bc i live in a different province in Turkey. I'll post a review with pics when I have it.
