No doubt, there is a LOT to like about some of the changes. Most of the best ones, were the most subtle ones that just added something that 70s era effects just could not handle. Some, like the Han vs. Greedo stuff were just WHOLLY unnecessary.

Why oh why have they not released the original (non-CG-Lucas-ruined) trilogy on blu-ray or digitally????
They were released in their original cuts on DVD in a limited run packaged w/the Lucas post edits about 8 years ago. If you got your hands on those it's a short jump to pulling digital copies off the disk...

While the unedited versions of the original trilogy is undoubtedly better, there are some aspects I prefer in the special editions (blasphemy! get your pitchforks ready). I think my favorite additions to the films is the replacement of the Yub Nub theme at the end of Return of the Jedi. Indeed it is a catchy and memorial song, but the newer "Victory Celebration" really hits home for me. It feels more fitting than the original Yub Nub song and you get the satisfying feeling that there is a chance for peace in the galaxy. I also prefer the inclusion of the new Wampa suit. While it does to some degree take away the suspense of the scene in ESB, the new suit looks awesome and terrifying. I for one, like SOME of the added CGI at the Mos Eisley Spaceport. The new scenes really convey the grand idea of a spaceport. But hey, this is just my opinion seeing how i never grew up watching the original trilogy first.

You!

Your opinions are... acceptable. :P

With George's objections no longer a concern, now the only hurdle to something like this is the aforementioned distribution rights, which are held by Fox. Now, I am sure that Disney, with their near unlimited resources could come up with a deal that would be mutually beneficial for both studios. It becomes a matter of how high a priority to do they really view this issue? They know there is demand out there, but is there enough to make it worth the while of both studios?

Some kind of grassroots campaign to let them know the interest level might do it, but so far that has yet to materialize, and until they see the opportunity to not only satisfy ravenous demand, but also make a profit on it, I don't see the prospects as being really good.

Now, if they were to buy 20th Century Fox out completely (for a lot of reasons, including this one), then it might become more plausible. That would be pretty cool, but I am still wondering how it will be seeing a Star Wars movie without the 20th Century Fox fanfare at the beginning. I mean, that diddy is like a part of the soundtrack to me!

Disney and Fox are feuding right now over the Marvel Comics movie rights (Fox has X-men and Fantastic 4... Disney wants them back) so I'd imagine any kinda deal between them would be aways off.

The problem is that, other than X-Men, Fox has proven time, and again that these comic properties belong in the hands of Marvel/Disney. I understand that they still think there is a buck to be made somehow from all of this, but I think they have lost more money than they have made in recent years, and done a disservice to some of the properties along the way. I don't know how dismal a go of it they have to make before they realize that they would make more money selling them back, than attempting more movies, but it could not happen soon enough.

I can understand their anger with Marvel/Disney, since their record with these properties has been much more consistently positive, but as a business, they should know better than to make it personal like that. Hopefully, after the utter failure of the Fantastic Four, they are a little closer to realizing it.

It's good to see people haven't mauled me alive for what I said. I'm just glad this forum is nice and friendly, unlike any other forums where any mention of the prequels or the specialized versions will result in witch hunting and pitchforks.

But guys, if you want to see the original edits, i suggest searching for the de-specialized versions on the internet. Its free, well... If you don't mind ahem*torrenting*ahem stuff.

Also, Lucas could have sold the franchise with the condition of never releasing the originals. Maybe the conversation went like this:

"You can have Star Wars under one condition." Lucas said.
"Yeah?" Disney asked.
"Never release the original versions" He answered.
"Deal!" Disney exclaimed.
Mankind's greatest enemy is never a terrorist or villain. It's always mankind itself that poses a threat to everyone. He is as foolish as he is good.

Ducats to dollars some far flung release anniversary in the future Disney will rerelease the originals. The mouse is all about the money (not a bad thing if we get what we want). :P

So far, I have not seen or sensed anything that Disney has done with either Marvel, or LucasFilm that could be considered a "bad" thing. I am a wee bit concerned that with all of the Star Wars based projects they have scoped out, they might be overdoing it just a tad, but I am willing to ride through it and make judgement on the other side.

I think h2soy is right about them eventually releasing these, and I hope when they do, they do it right, as in hi-res scans of negatives, clean-up of digital elements, and the like. Just with added scenes removed.
