I'm planning to buy a Jade Fire to surprise my wife for her 30th birthday, since she's been trying to put together a Mara Jode cosplay set. But I don't want to just buy "off the rack," as it were. So I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts on how to make a Jade Fire hilt a little more unique.

So what does anybody and everybody think? If you had a Jade Fire, how would you want it to be different from everybody else's? I just want to be able to tell her "yours is custom. I spoke with the artist to make sure you got a super-special birthday gift."

If it was for me (I'll be getting mine in a few months), I'd be getting the weathered finish because that's just too cool. But it's not for me and that will make the whole piece look significantly darker, which the lady would not prefer.

PS I'm planning to build a nice (or at least nice-looking) gift box to wrap it in. If anyone has ever done/seen such a thing, I'd love some inspiration there as well.

Something simple that you could ask is for brass button head screws instead of the standard silver ones that go all around the pommel end of the hilt. I think that would look amazing on either a standard finish or a weathered finish…even more awesome on a weathered, probably.

Well, I'm pretty sure that here recently, somebody ordered a Jade with a custom crystal chamber featuring a Krayt pearl style crystal but I'm sure that was very pricey and they may not do it again anyways. But I'm just saying sometimes they will do crazy stuff like that. Maybe it just depends on if they like the idea or not. lol

Mario I was just typing a suggestion and then I realized you suggested about the exact same thing I was typing. lol I'm out of ideas.

I like these ideas. I'm definitely going to ask for the two-tone finish (it was suggested that I get a color to match the blade, rather than just black to fill in all the crannies and crevices, but I don't have any kind of reference for what that might look like) and now I'm going to think about asking for all the screws and knobs in brass color as well (or maybe black; need to ponder that a bit).

For me that's the big deal: the hilt all in silver is just too clean-looking. Clean is not the word, but I think you know what I mean. There's no contrast in it.

In terms of the hilt looking too Clean as you put it (and yes i know what you mean) you could perhaps see if someone in your area would be able to do some engraving on it, get a nice message or significant date etc on it? or even something as simple as her name with some flourish round it?

Yup. I'm planning on doing that once I get it. I just want to have it in hand to show someone when I ask if they can engrave it. I used to be an engraver, and there was nothing more frustrating than someone describing a special item they wanted engraved, telling them I could do it, then receiving the item to learn that it was not at all as described.

Well, I suppose the only thing more frustrating than that was when I screwed up the engraving on a custom piece. I once ruined a doorknocker that a fellow bought for Roberto Baggio. The customer had somehow arranged to have some time on the field alone with Baggio, and wanted to give him a gift from the US. So he bought him a doorknocker with an eagle on it. He also brought in a plain-old doorknocker and wanted his own name engraved on that. I misunderstood his instructions and put the wrong name on each knocker.

Long story short: I'm planning to get it engraved, but I need to actually show it to the engraver for both his peace of mind and my own.

Thanks everybody for the great ideas. Keep 'em coming! I'm still waiting to hear back from sales before I actually place my order. And I will of course share photos of the end product.

Okay, I'm all set to order; there's just one thing I forgot. Soundfonts.

The "Light" font is obviously the classic lightsaber effects, and the "Dark" font is meant to more closely emulate the Vader/Maul/etc sounds. I've watched a few of the YouTube videos, but I'm having a hard time getting a good feel for what the dark font sounds like. What with echo and people talking (mostly the echo), I can't tell what it's like. Can someone recommend a particular video or send me somewhere else that has just a very pure sample of what the soundfont sounds like?

Oh. I almost forgot. After watching the video, it occured to me that some hilts have two buttons and some only have one. Can anyone tell me what that's about? I can sorta tell from the videos what the two buttons do, but I can't imagine why a hilt with sound would only have one. So is that the defining factor? Anything with sound has a second button? Or is there more to it then that?

Thanks again, all. You've been super helpful.

I don't know any good videos for crimson but

The button thing is pretty simple, warrior and champion hilts have 1 button. The champion uses the same button to operate the in hilt customizations for sound, blade flicker, motion sensitivity and whatnot. That saber button is for the auxiliary sound effect.

Hero tier sabers have 2 buttons. They have more auxiliary sounds as well as a second blade color. It's just that it takes the extra button for all the features in hero tier hilts.

When they say "8-10 weeks lead time," is that pretty accurate, or do they overestimate to make sure they don't disappoint? What's everyone else's experience regarding how long it takes to get a saber after you place an order?

the 8-10 weeks is pretty acurate on Saberforge.com. On their etsy page, it's 1-2 weeks.

They're trying to reduce the wait time to 6-8 weeks, but they're still working on finishing up orders placed during Black Friday/Cyber Monday…so it may be a while before the wait time goes down. I know they've been hiring and training new techs at their shop for the past couple months to try and keep up with their expanding business.

So... Are you saying that if I'd ordered the same thing from their Etsy store, I'd have it in less than a month but since I ordered it from their website it's probably going to take over two months? That doesn't sound right.

Their Etsy page sells their hilts that are already built, kinda like when you see them post their "quick ship" sabers on facebook. If you want a saber built to order, you have to order from their website and wait to have it built.

I guess if you order something from Etsy that they don't already have built, it would be the same wait time you get from their website.

I haven't ordered anything from their Etsy page, so I don't have any experiences to share with you.
