First attempt at a Chance Cube from Episode I.

It's not exactly screen accurate on the paint job, but I wanted to make it look well used.

Thoughts?

You've got the right idea!

Have you tried clay or similar that you can bake to harden? you could get that more "hand-formed" look to it and it might take the paint differently.....

Maybe hand rub on a chalk paint to the faces to add to the look you're going for.

Very fun prop idea! :D

Watto is probably my favorite part of the prequel trilogy. I love every second of screen time he occupies. His voice, his design, his attitude. So perfect.

I used to do a brisk business on ebay selling those things circa 2005-2006, made some good friends that way too.

I just started making them again and selling on etsy -- sold my first this week.

To weather, what I do is get a small plastic container, fill it with rocks, insert painted cube and SHAKE SHAKE SHAKE!

Oh forgot to mention, be sure to seal it once it is weathered the way you like, otherwise the paint tends to wear off in your pocket, or as you roll it. I use a few coats of mod podge.

I am definitely doing to try this method. I think you are my new hero. The weathering with the dremel just never seems to come out right. I like the look before painting it, with the rounded edges and dull matte finish of the die, but the coloring always seems off.

For the colors, I just use craft store tempura paint, which when dry, weathers well. I am having a bit of trouble with my blue paint flaking off too much, so what I do is weather and if there is too little blue left on a face, seal the other faces with mod podge, touch up the face a bit with a few dabs of paint, and when dry, weather in my rock box again.

I like the rock box because it adds a random element to the weathering, and makes it appear that it happened naturally by years of rolling across the floors of podracer hangers. ;)
