^^ This explains it all! Screw the technicalities! You must be of pure evil to see pure red!!

Yes, this is true. I compared the flux values of the XB-D LEDs and those of the XP-E "Photo Red" values and found that you could lose roughly 45% of your brightness if you were to have a true red saber. I never converted radiant flux to luminous flux before, though, so I may have made a mistake in my calculation.

I will probably order some components and compare them in person to confirm, but I think we have the culprit.

This is probably pretty close to the mark. Those wavelengths get pretty long once your into deep red territory. I can believe the brightness loss could be that much.
Its like sub bass frequencies below 80Hz in audio. They are so close to the bottom end range of human hearing that you really have to pump them up hard to be heard. But if you boost at 120Hz it takes a lot less power to get essentially the same effect.
This seems to be the approach Cree is taking as well. Its just more noticeable with colors than it is with audio.
That is to say most people cannot hear the difference between 80Hz and 120Hz, bass is bass, but they damn sure can see the difference between red and reddish orange.

I believe that the 12w LEDs are Cree XB-D, and the 12w+ LEDs are Cree XP-E. At least that was my most recent understanding, unless someone has heard something to the contrary.

I plan on upgrading my own saber from 12w to 12w+ as soon as the rush subsides.
Imagine what you will know tomorrow....

Interesting, it seems this issue has recently come up. Not too long ago we were having complications with a member who-shall-not-be-named and he started this mystery of why some people's red LEDs were appearing as an orange of some kind. Very strange indeed.
Light and darkness, you cannot have one without the other. To achieve equilibriem you must be in harmony with both; the path between.

Having walked the dark path I can confirm this. The more gungans I slaughtered the more red my blade became

As mentioned previously in this thread using science to confirm the reason why the red led is nearing the orange spectrum, I think the focus of some individuals is a little off.
I have a Mauler with 12w+ Red. I can see that what's been said is true and there is a bit of an orange hue in the blade itself. However, if you look at the aura around the blade and the colour illuminating the room, it is red.

The tricky thing is that if the LED were closer to true red they wouldn't be as bright (because PHSYICS) and then peeps would be disappointed about that too.

Per Knytiri's earlier warning I would suggest that this current thread of conversation change course before devolving into pointless bickering..... again. And here's Tarkin:

This thread is simply an intelligent and scientific discussion of the wavelength and physical nature of RED light. I don't think anyone here is bickering pointlessly. To me it seems like a civil and educated discussion regarding an ever present issue with red light and red LEDS

Does anybody here own a purple saber?

How does the purple look?

I want to send mine back in a get another dark side color but don't want orange...so I figure purple might be the way to go.

Thoughts....opinions?
