We seem to want to judge the overall integrity of SF by the things we perceive they are not doing. The problem there is, those kinds of assumptions are based around how our individual transactions proceed, against our perceived expectations. If it does not go well, we tend to assume that things are screwed up, and that somebody is falling down on the job. What we never seem willing to do, is ponder all the things that SF is doing to make the process better. They have expanded their work force, their machine shop, and their CS department. All the while, the volume has stayed steady, or gone up, so we are not yet seeing all the benefits of those actions, but they are doing all of this to improve the process. Assuming bad intent on their part is just incorrect.
I don't begrudge anyone wanting their order sooner, than later, but in reality there is still only one company that can get an order to you any quicker than even the expanded lead times from SF. The sabers from them tend to be more "off the shelf" types, which can be boxed, and sent in a matter of days. SaberForge will soon have that kind of service as well, but for now, they are getting out literally hundreds of orders daily, between ASP, and regular saber orders. Their custom shop stopped accepting new work so they could join in to help them fulfill orders, and even that has not yet put a noticeable dent in the lead time, but it does indicate they are within the industry norm, and doing everything they can to get your order to you.
The mind set we need to get away from is the one that tells us that we might not receive our order at all, or that there is a deliberate campaign to ensure the longest wait time possible. Neither is true. There is also no deception intended when lead times are quoted (which has been always been defined as an estimate BTW), and then slip because of factors beyond their control. It is not a position that they want to be in either! They would much rather that folks get their orders exactly when their quoted lead time said they would, or before. However, any custom manufacturing outfit (especially one that has experienced such explosive growth over the last year), is going to have their share of bumps while they find ways to accommodate the volume of orders that they find themselves with, and adjust accordingly.
This has all been said before, and each time someone's expectations are exceeded, and the distrust, and anger begins to build, a post goes up that has me reiterating it. Perhaps I will just start cutting/pasting this version, and use it when needed. Anyway, the situation has not really changed much over the past few months, and while I hope it improves soon, there is currently no empirical evidence to that effect. So, knowing that, if we just brace ourselves for the long haul from the outset, and trust that we will receive our orders as soon as is possible (allowing for the occasional parts shortage which contributed to some models taking longer than even the currently stated lead time), we will all be fine.
In the meantime, we help each other deal with the anticipation, and the wait through all sorts of entertaining distractions in this forum.
